Not sure I really understand what you are saying but if you focus on Personal Address Book when you create a new group, one will be created that is not a subgroup of any other group. Anyway, as I explained in my previous post, you can drag groups around to where ever you want them so it is very simple to change a "root" group to a subgroup and vice versa.
OK I found problem.

I was trying to create a new top group but no where to highlight on left window where I have the groups other than in a subgroup.

But if you create new address book by keeping mouse in what I have as the right window that lists all the addresses it does allow a new top level group to be created. Doesn't seem to be logical that to create a new group you have to be in the window of addresses vs the left window (the way I have set up) that show all the groups.
You can move address groups to and from other groups and root by using ctl+alt+drag-and-drop the same functionality as moving email folders and by a similar mechanism you can copy contacts to another folder using ctl+drag-and-drop. Alt drag-and-drop seems to be identical to drag-and-drop and moves contacts from one folder to another.

What would be REALLY nice would be some documentation on this (like what functionality do address group hierarchies have?) and host of othe features. The Help is hopelessly out of date.
You can create a new group by selecting the root of the address book and go for edit -> new group
When you're not in the root of the address book, but in a group, then the same procedure will give you a subgroup.
In old versions (before v4) it wasn't possible to create susgroups, therefore it didn't matter what you selected when creating a new group.
Alt Drag/Drop works for individual entries but doesn't work to move address folders around or get a subdirectory up to top level since could not make new top level address book.. have 5 from prior versions (top level) but can't figure out how to make a new one with latest update, only will put in as a subdirectory of an existing unless I am missing something obvious.
Yikes tearing hair out on same problem.

Can not create a new group in the root to level only as a subgroup of an existing group. Prior groups made many versions ago. Tried to add new group in .ini file but that didn't work either.
When creating address book groups in The Bat 5, I have had a new group placed as a sub-group of another when I wanted it as a separate group, and visa versa. I have gone through the menus, but have been unable to figure out how address groups and subgroups are organized, changed or edited. How can I reconfigure my address book groups and subgroups?
