Thanks Roelof, FWIW here are the last two error messages in thebat_Exceptions.log file
It crashed again after these errors though. I see nothing untoward at all in the normal log.
The drive that TB! is on (D: Drive) has 821GB free space and : Drive has 902GB free!
Not sure if these extracts tell you much? Does your log mention anything odd during the download?
Most crashes enter something in the thebat_Exceptions.log file which can be found in your mail directory, what's mentioned in that file during the crash?
I think your best option would be to contact ritlabs support and supply them with a copy of this message.
It can't be a virus scanner issue as I rarely use one. For sure many many times when this has occurred there's been no anti virus software on the PC, but thanks for the idea. I leave up to 3000 messages on the server very occasionally as I access them from when I am on the road, if required. This happens though with 20 messages on the server, or 3000 +, it seems entirely random, and nothing in the log suggests any problem. At one stage I got so wound up I thought of leaving the messages on there and asking an expert to download them onto their copy of TB! It would mean divulging my password, but I could change it later I guess, and I don't have any great e-mail secrets or shames Thanks Roelof.

EDIT: It did this again last night, eventually, after isolating the offending message on its own on the server by getting and deleting all others, it downloaded after several attempts which crashed TB! I have kept the message, plus a screen shot of it amongst the other messages, showing headers, on the server.
Generally TB only has problems with messages that contain a virus.
When your virus scanner intercepts the file, then TB doesn't know how to continue.
As the download process is interrupted the messages on the server won't be deleted, because even though downloaded messages are marked to be deleted after being downloaded, the actual deleting wil happen only after the downloading has been terminated properly.

TB's account log will tell you what message has been downloaded last, so that should be helpfull with deciding what's the problem message.

For myself I'm using a virus scanner that has a plug-in for TB. That means the scanning is integrated within TB and not interrupting from the outside. And I can't remember when something like this happened to me. You might consider configuring your virus scanner to skip TB message base and temp folder. TB itself won't run viruses and when you see a message with an odd attachment then common sense dictates that that you shouldn't open it.

1800 Messages on the server? Is that your daily flow or do you store the messages on server for a couple of days? In case it's your daily flow then you should consider downloading your messages more often.
Roelof, thank you very much indeed, that has sorted it out! It was getting to bug me You really are a great asset to the Bat forums.

Whilst I have your ear there's one issue that I have had for many many years with TB! Once every few weeks, occasionally more often, but definitely an ongoing scenario, I am downloading POP3 mail and at a certain message TB! crashes. Bang! It's gone, no warning, no error messages, it just disappears. It's always at a particular message, but rarely from the same sender, and with no apparent similarities I can see. If I go to the Despatch Mail On Server menu and download all the messages that way I can sometimes count down to the offending message and un-mark it so it is neither fetched, deleted, anything. It will then fetch and delete, or whatever i want, all the other messages. I can then go back and tick what options I want to download the offending message and nine times out of ten it will fetch and display it with no problems. Sometimes I can be unsure as to exactly which is the offending message, especially if there's say 1800 messages on the server. I will then pick out a span of messages to un-mark and leave. I KNOW the offending message is in the small, say 20 message batch, left on the server, but nine times out of ten I can then go back after getting and having TB! automatically delete the fetched messages, and others download fine. i know one of them is the message that crashed TB! before getting the others though. It has done this through 3 new PC's, on my laptop, and though umpteen versions of TB! When it does it Sod's law says it's when I am in a rush to get an urgent e-mail, and it takes ages faffing about sorting it out. Have you got any ideas what may be causing this sporadic event? Thanks, and thanks again for getting rid of my box
Close TB
Go to your mail directory
Rename the file tbuser.def to tbuser.def.old
Start TB

If it's really the quick search box then this should remedy it. (But it'll also delete any self made short cuts.)
After many years of usage with little or o trouble my copy of The Bat! has done something odd. Please see linked screenshot with an empty box circled. It suddenly appeared when I ran TB! this morning, and I can find no apparent way to move, close or put text in it. What is it, and how can I get rid of it please? Only clue maybe that I changed the menu configuration the other week to get rid of the Quick Search box, but I have now tried setting it all to DEFAULT with no change. Thanks. Screenshot is at <noindex>http://www.gatesgarth.com/box.png</noindex> I am using version 4.2.44.2

EDIT I think it's the search box, but there's no shifting the thing!
