Your last suggestion sounds perfect, I'm happy to do them all at once. Thanks!
Apart fr om setting it per folder, you can set at the account settings that messages won't go to trash:
account -> properties -> mail management -> deletion
Just like Rick said, that still gives the option to undelete it. TB doesn't delete messages, it marks them as deleted. Whatever you may have been thinking, Outlook did the same.
The idea is that when you've got a folder with 1000 messages and you want to delete one, the whole folder (it's a single file) will have to be rewritten. Now you delete the next message and the next and every time you would need to rewrite the complete folder. Therefore mail clients (just like databases) mark the message(s) as deleted and when you compact, compress or archive (or whatever your client may call it) the folder then it will be rewritten. Saves a lot of disk activity and therefore time.

I've configured my setup to (purge and) compact all folders on exit.
Compacting is to rewrite all folders with deleted messages so that the new message base won't contain those deleted messages.
Purging is marking those messages as deleted that are older than the lim it set in the folder properties (under additional) or those messages that exceed the configured maximum (old messages are deleted first) Naturally the purging will be done before the compacting.

When purging, TB won't purge unread messages unless you've configured it thus in the account settings:
account -> properties -> mail management -> deletion
Under folder properties look for ADDITIONAL and you can set it to compress on exit 9closing the program. That will slow down closing the program
A better option is to just press CONTROL C on the folder to purge and compress (doesn't work as expected on IMAP folders which i hope will be fixed soon - you need to just comprss it to remove the messages from the server)

BETTER YET use the Maintenence center under the FOLDER menu to do them all at once while you get a cup of coffee. If you like that, you can assign a keyboard shortcut for it
Thanks again Rick. I see the folder properties, it just doesn't provide for permanent delete, one message at a time.

Sounds like I'll need to develop a new habit for this one. I'll look to see whether purging or compacting can be done automagically, as on program exit, or Tuesdays at 3, or whatever.
The default is SHIFT DELETE and can be set per folder. That being said, NOTHING is really deleted until you compact the folder

Right click to either purge and compact or just compact and to set the alternate delete go to the folder properties and there is a delete section
In Outlook, I am used to using ctrl-shift-del to permanently delete a message. By "permanently delete", I mean that it does not go to the Trash or anywhere else, it is simply gone and cannot be retrieved.

Now, I am looking in Account Properties > Mail Mgt > Deletion, and I see no similar option.

Does The Bat! provide such an option? How?

Thanks!
