Hi Roelof. In the end I created a tbk bakup file, completely uninstalled The Bat, cleaned out any old Registry entries, reinstalled The Bat, restored the tbk file and all is working perfectly.

All painlessly completed in about 15 minutes and no further problem with old conflicting index files (I have my mail folders located in the Bat program directory - makes it easier for the daily automated off-site backup of my PC's data files).

Thanks again Roelof for your always helpful advice in this forum.

Regards
Chris
That might be a solution, the old style index files shouldn't be included in the backup.
Please note that uninstalling TB won't delete the message base, so if you've set the mail directory to its default location, the backup will be restored on top of your old message base without deleting the obsolete files. So you'd better move the old mail directory to another location. And that moving (in stead of deleting) is because sometimes thes thing go awry.
I open and close The Bat at the start and end of each day, ensuring all the folders compact automatically and gracefully.

I'm thinking perhaps to backup up everything to a tbk file. Uninstall The Bat, reinstall again and import the tbk file.

Would that be a good idea to try?
If everything went as it should then the old version isn't available anymore on your system, is that correct?
Your bat crashes every 3-5 days, are running it permanently?
Closing it while it's still running properly should cause the index files to be saved and therefore have a newer date than the old style index files.
I recently upgraded from v 3.99.3 to the current V 5.3.8. Installation instructions said not to uninstall the old version, but to simply install V 5.3.8 over the top. I did this and all seem fine, excepting the latest version will sometimes crash (say once every 3-5 days) and when I restart The Bat it displays the following message:

"Older version's index files found. It looks like an older version of the program is being used after installation of The Bat 5.3.8. Please make sure this does not happen in future in order to keep message base working properly"

Can anyone suggest what I ought to do, to fix this problem.Thank you for any advice.

Chris
