I was about to ask the same thing but I found it.
first in the menu bar go to workspace > window split mode > horizontal split

then go to option > preferences
-click on message list
-check the switch to summary view when narrower than..
-i left it at 30%

they you can slide the messages window narrower till you get the nice summary view, which is what I'm use to and comfortable with.
