Thanks for your reply. I was kind of afraid of that.

I have fairly complicated templates at the account level, and I tend to tinker with them. I'm also a programmer with a pretty well-developed sense of what kinds of things lead to maintenance nightmares, and sprinkling custom templates around in the address book is one.

I do appreciate the ability to have custom templates for individuals, but it's kind of overkill for this problem. What I guess I need is another macro field in the address book for the desired greeting, that defaults to the first name, and there doesn't seem to be one now. Oh well. One can hope.

But I do appreciate your taking the time to reply.

-jimc
For Grandma, you can make an address book template that has any text you like (Dear Grandma) etc
Play with that a bit and you will see the possibilities. One thing that is not obvious is that it will be plain text unless you go to format and change it to HTML
When starting a new message, the default template adds "Hi %TOFName" as the first line of the message. This is fine in most cases, but sometimes a different greeting is desired. Some email clients have an address book field to specify the desired greeting, but I can't find anything in TB that will accomplish this.

A few examples may help. If I write an email to my friend Bob Smith, I get "Hi Bob" which is fine. If I'm writing to my doctor, I'd like the name to be "Fred Jones MD" but I don't want the greeting to be "Hi Fred", I want "Hi Dr Jones". Or if I'm writing to my grandmother Mary Thompson, I want her full name used in the "To:" field but the greeting should be "Hi Grandma".

Is there any way to do this, or am I stuck with modifying the greeting every time the default one is inappropriate?

Thanks,

-jimc
