I just solved this myself! The quick-reply pane was sized too small in the vertical direction. I dragged it bigger, and suddenly the quick-reply stuff popped up in the gray rectangle. If I drag it shorter, that stuff disappears again. There's a set limit on height so it won't let me drag it arbitrarily small, but apparently the minimum height is too small for the active content.

The quick-reply pane never displays at the bottom of the main window. I can turn it on and off via the Workspace menu, and when I turn it on , TheBat opens up space at the bottom for it but it is just a blank gray rectangle, no quick-reply.

Quick-reply does show correctly when I open a separate message window. It can be turned on and off in the expected way.

Is there some configuration that I'm overlooking?
