If interested, you may want to experiment with IMAXSIZE, a handy utility for working with IMAP accounts and for converting email for same. One feature is that it allows you to view server parameters, which provides some info on which servers use the root setting (an example is Gmail, which prefers [Gmail] in the root folder for simpler folder management.)
