Update on that, after restarting the program for a different reason, wasted space is eliminated.  Before I was only seeing two lines for each message list item, now 4 - much like Outlook.  But the icon just serves no useful purpose that I've figured out yet.  Though I am an official noob with The Bat! at this time.

Is there any way to suppress the display of the giant color blocks in the summary view?  The color and labeling are meaningless and takes up valuable space.
