I believe that is the way it is supposed to work although having the option to add the templates to subfolders would be very handy.
If you have no templates then the account template is used The folder templates are next and the address book templates over ride folder templates

I'll take correction if that is the wrong or incomplete list

Hello,

how can I achieve that a folder automatically uses the message templates from its parent folder (unless individual message templates are defined for that folder)?

Currently when I create a new (sub)folder, the message templates are "inherited" from the "root" folder (or from the account), not from the parent folder.
