During my fight with this situation, I arrived at the suspicion it might be caused by the language setting of Windows on the target PC (Dutch=Western). That is different from the source PC (Hungarian=Central European).

In a nutshell: A backup from my old laptop, restored in a fresh install of The Bat! on my new laptop resulted in a hanging process. During the restore I was allowed to select the accounts and folders to restore, but the restoring process itself would hang.

I made sure the interface language of the target PC was the same as on the source PC and after that the restore went flawless. After the restoration process I changed back to Dutch. Everything works fine.

It appears to me the backup/restoration process is affected by the language setting of Windows. It shouldn't be, but I found a way around this problem
Thanks, Miloš! Sadly, I don't have access to that original files. They were overwritten when I reformatted the hard drive, and I didn't think to save them because I've never had The Bat!'s native recovery fail like this before.

Testing on an old version of The Bat! was a great idea, but sadly still no luck. I'll submit a support ticket next.

I appreciate your help!
If yes, you can just copy the whole folder to the appropriate location, and TB should recognize everything. In the worst case, you would need to recreate the accounts, point TB to the folder of each account (there is an option to do that, "From folder" or something like that), and they will be fully restored.

2. If not, I suggest you install an earlier version of TB, restore the backup, and then upgrade. You can find the installers for earlier versions here: <noindex>https://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/archive-versions.php</noindex>

Finally, it would be good if you could report the issue to support using the link above.

I always use method #1 since it is faster and just works.
Reviving this thread because I'm having what feels like the same problem. At the end of December, I refreshed my laptop by completely reinstalling Windows 10. I used the The Bat!'s backup function before doing so and generated a .tbk file (5.92 GB, so not nearly so large as the original poster's). After Windows was finished reinstalling, I downloaded and installed The Bat! v11.4. When I tried to restore from my .tbk, the program just hung. I let it run overnight last night, and woke up to it still looking the same — and when I say it hangs, I mean that the Maintenance Center screen goes blank. It doesn't show any progress because there is no progress bar showing.

I've been using The Bat! for over 20 years and have never had a restore process fail like this, so it's very odd. Would love any suggestions.
Are you sure that The Bat was actually frozen, and not just working very hard? Have you let those PCs run overnight, to see if there was any progress the next morning?

Note: when a message is deleted, it may still be physically present in the messagebase (if you have not compacted its folder yet). Use the command "Browse deleted messages" in the Folder menu to see which deleted messages are still there. They will be shown in the message list with 'strike-through' letters.

Personally I never use The Bat's backup feature, because I use regular backup software to backup all my files, not just those of The Bat.
Hi,

I have an issue with retrieving archive from TBK file.
It is huge, about 30 GB file!
When archiving there is no error warning.
But recently I had an issue with my theBat! sent messages from one of my mailboxes.
So I tried to recover it from archive. I tried two different PCs.
It didn't work on both machines.
The Bat Freezes, nothing happens.

What could be a reason of dissapearing messages from sent mailbox?
How to avoid it in future?
What to do to retrieve archived sent messages?
