After checking the settings for the Ticker tape I found a solution.  
I disabled "Always on top".

This way when I maximize the video screen the Ticker tape does not show up.

Is there a hot key for the ticker tape that shows messages arriving in the bottom right corner?
Or can one be made?

Often I will be watching a video and the timeline is hidden by the ticker tape when new e-mails arrive.
It would be nice to de-activate the ticker tape temporarily for such cases.
