When there is no longer a match for your search string, TB backs off the last letter(s) that caused the mismatch. In your example there is at least one subject that matches "wise" but nothing that matches "wiseco" (or "wisec").

When I use the quick search in the toolbar it erases letters that I type in.  For example I attempted to search for wiseco.  I type it in, and it removed the co.  Why does this happen?  I am assuming it is setup/setting on my part.
