Can you try another email client like Thunderbird to see if you can get it to work? What ISP are you using, could they be blocking certain ports?
Presuming that Sygate is your (only) firewall, what about disabling it?
I've installed the new 3.71 Bat and nothing, also tried seting up a new account and nothing, also tried removing rules from sygate and nothing, even redid the POP settings in the gmail panel and nothing
all I get is that message that it can not connect to the server

I just don't know what may be causeing the problem
If you are using Sygate Firewall, try deleting any and all rules/permissions you have set up for The Bat. Maybe something got hosed up. When you relaunch The Bat, Sygate should prompt you for permission again.
First make sure that POP is still enabled in your Gmail account. In the Gmail web interface, go to settings, forwarding and pop, make sure POP download status says "POP is enabled."

Here's how I have my Gmail account set up in The Bat:

1) Right click account and select properties.
2) Select "Transport" from the menu on left.
3) Make sure you have the following settings:

  Send mail:
  SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
Click on Authentication, the only things checked are "Perform SMTP authentication" and "same user/ password"
Connection: Secure to regular port (STARTTLS)
  Port: 587

   Receive mail:
   mail server: pop.gmail.com
   Click on Authentication: select "Regular"
   user: your username
   password: your password
Connection: Secure to dedicated port (TLS)
   Port: 995

Those should work for you.

The only thing I can suggest, is that you create a new account with the correct settings for your gmail account. (Just in case your current account settings have gone corrupt.)
When that doesn't do the trick you'd better look outside of TB. Firewall, changed settings at Gmail, new virus scanner, etc.
Do you recall changing anything last Saturday or Sunday?
New version of TB, Firewall, Virus scanner, Gmail settings or even some (apparently) unrelated software?
I had my gmail account working in Bat for quite a long time now but from sunday all I get while trying to connect to it is just a message: can't connect to server,
I did not change anything in settings of TheBat and I can login to my account with no problem through a web browser
