Gmail Labels - Similar In The Bat! Is there a features similar to Gmail labels? in forum The Bat! - Configuring the E-mail Client.
Wouldn't it be quite easy to add such great feature without chaning the mail-file-structure? Each mail has an ID, so you can add a n:m-relationship to assign to tags. Add a new (floating) window where users can (un)check tags per mail.

Searching would be great with and/or for tags.

What do you think??

I hope the developers are seriously considering adding this feature to The Bat (if not for v3, then for v4). It looks like the latest version of Thunderbird has added a "tag" feature that seems to work just like the Gmail tags.

Even if tags aren't added in The Bat 3.x, I hope the developers will seriously consider it for 4.x. Once you've tried it, it's just an incredibly convenient feature.

I dream a mailreader with tagging feature, so I'm searching workarounds for mail tagging in The Bat.

One option could be tags insertion in a custom header, something like X-Tags or similar (there is a Thunderbird extension, "Tag the bird", that does this). Tags so can be manipulated using the power of the filters.

The other is the just exposed tags-in-the-memo-field; I had just thought on designing an insertion facility with an external macro automation program; I think, however, that there could be such (or others) tag insertion facility directly in The Bat, without an external program: it could be enough, as Warner wrote for example, a tag list (customizable by user)in the right-click popup menu of the memo field. I think this could be reached with a minimum impact on the rewrite of the program.

I prefer (and still use) the memo option, but there are some points on the memo field:

1) There is the potential drawback of loss of tags if I export the messages out of the program: memo info aren't saved in the message, (or am I wrong?). Is there a mode to make persistent in the message the content of the memo field? In this mode, for example, if I forward the message tags survive and can be used by other users.

2)I don't like the floated memo window very much. I'd prefer it docked in the main program interface, for example below the message window or below the folder tree window

3)It works, but it seems so naive : I'd like a better tag presentation in the message window, something like the Tag the bird extension. This could be reached if memo tags present a particular format (I use brackets, something like [mail] ): the program could regognize this format and render the content in the message interface.

I don't think it's likely that the development team will add multiple tags any time soon. You realize f course that that would mean that the message base format should be changed as there is no room for that feature now.
And a change like that would have serious repercussions. Like a major rewrite of TB, the update procedure should contain a conversion process, lots of plug-ins should be rewritten (and antivirus products should maintain two versions of their plug-in, one for the current message base and one for the next while all plug-ins function the same from TB v1.6 till TB v3) Not something that's very likely to happen any time soon.

The closest thing TB currently has are colour groups, but a message can have just one clour group assigned to it, while you want the ability of multiple tags.

To automatically add fixed strings to the memo field you can use a third party tool. I can't recollect the name right now, but Marck pearlstone (Are you reading this, Marck?) is using a tool that can define macros in any software.

Your suggestion of adding lines to the memo field and using those as virtual folder search criteria works, but it's very unwieldy. If I have hundreds or thousands of old messages, it would take forever to go back through them and add all the memo lines.

Is there any way to automate this? Either way, I'd like to vote for a Gmail-like tags feature, too. It seems like this could be done in one of two ways:
1) Add a "real" tags feature to The Bat.
2) Add a feature that provides an easy way to add user-defined words to an email's memo field. For example, I'd like to be able to define, in advance, words like "Friend 1", "Friend 2", and so on, and then just right-click an email and have a menu option to add any of these to an email's memo field.

I think what you want is virtual folders. I'm trying out TB, moving from Opera's M2 mail client. In Opera Filters seem to be the same thing as Virtual Folders in TB, and Labels in Gmail.

I'm checking out TB because Opera refuses to support S/MIME, which I need.

It's possible to assign a colour group to a message, but that only allows for one label per message.

Another option would be to create your own labels in the memo field. You can insert multiple lines of comment in the memo field, so you could tag them like this:

in one and the same memo field.
It's possible to search on the contents of the memo field with the search function.
Another possibility is to create virtual folders that are triggered by the contents of your memo field, in that case you simply select the appropriate virtual folder and youyr topics are only one click away no matter in what real folder they are to be found.

Is there a feature in The Bat! similar to labels in Gmail?

I'm looking for a way to categorize or tag messages without having to copy them to folders. This would solve a frustration for me. It's time consuming to copy messages to multiple folders (which is needed when a message pertains to multiple topics). Copying to multiple folders also duplicates the message, which I don't want to do.

I'd rather assign multiple labels to the message. I'd also like to have the ability to search by label.
