I feel stupid, but somehow I didn't realize that you could minimize that field's width.  Duh.
Not sure how I missed that, but it fixed my problem just fine.

I think the only thing you can do is to set the width of the Total cloumn to zero.

I wish to only show the "unread" number, rather than the "total" number. Aside from sliding the tab to the right so that it's cut-off/hidden, is there a way to disable the total field, so that it doesn't show?

I can customize all of the fields in the viewmodes which display above the list of emails, but haven't found a way to customize the fields above my mailboxes.

Sorry if I'm not explaining the question clearly.
