Unable to import emails from Thunderbird

Unable to import emails from Thunderbird Only "Mailbox Import Wizard" is available in forum The Bat! - Configuring the E-mail Client.
Sadly you have a point. Some defects in the bat cannot be criticized.

The lack of HTML support is long standing. I can live with it but the answer when it is brought up is "the world should use plain text" There are a lot of reasons why that would be a great idea but it isn't going to happen. Ritlabs as a company keeps hiding behind that and I am afraid that it will contribure to their undoing.
I have since bit the bullet and switched to Pocomail 4 after two weeks with The Bat!

In fact, I had evaluated both of them and settled for TB! due to how it handled its accounts (i.e. each a/c has its own set of folders etc) as well as how you can have different views within the preview pane. And it is non-bloated, fast and works when it does. But some of the GLARING issues left me wondering wtf is going on back at RITlabs.

Disappearing emails, disappearing folders, unresolved bugs lingering for God knows how long, re-emerging "fixed" bugs and slew of other issues etc. But once I started experiencing the disappearing folders (with emails) bug, I knew that it was over.

Hell, I filed a slew of bugs and issues in the dB, only to be met with some hostility in the Beta mailing list by the elitists who think that harassing people is the best way to pass the time.

====quote====

Reply to All can be found in the menu:

=============

heh, yeah, I found the icon last night, but the hotkey helps. Thanks!

====quote====

To view the messages grouped by date

=============

For some reason I missed that. When I was checking to make sure my messages exported correctly, I picked one message which had a thread going back to 2005. I'm not even going to tell you how many times I had to click on that thread before giving up.

Anyway, I just tried it and it does exactly what I want and _better_ than TB. That, combined with the robust threaded view, I tell you, The Bat! has certainly improved since the last time I checked it out several years ago.

My Tbird has a few hundred folders, so rather than importing each folder one by one, I'm exporting my Tbird email by moving it all into much fewer folders, then resorting afterwards. My folder system was getting a little messed up anyway, so it's time for a clean reorganization.

Reply to All can be found in the menu:
Message -> Reply to All
Or by pressing Ctrl-Shift-F5 with the message selected in the message list pane.
The standard toolbar has an icon of an envelope with a double arrow to the left.
The only place where I miss the reply-to-all function is the right mouse button pop-up, but you can remedy that with the customise function.

To view the messages grouped by date
View -> View threads by -> Grouped by date
Or press Alt-
The Bat! has also the option to create view modes, you can assign view modes to folders, but you can also assign them to message list tabs, thus enabling you to switch between view modes fast. To really appreciate view modes you've got to experiment with them. (Folder -> Folder View mode -> Manage view modes)

I haven't got any influence on the registering process, so I can't help you on that.

Unable to import emails from Thunderbird Only "Mailbox Import Wizard" is available in forum The Bat! - Configuring the E-mail Client.
No kidding. Here is what I had to do to export all my emails

Run TB

Installed the Mboximport plugin. Restarted TB

Run TBat!

Create accounts in TBAT! based on those in TB

Create folders (within each account) in TBAT! based on those in TB

Exported each mailbox separately instead of the folder structure (which would have been easier to import) since TBat! created the resulting structures incorrectly during the import.

Select previously created target folder within the account tree and used the Unix mail import option. Then selected the exported mailbox.
Rinse. Repeat.
Several hours later, I was done and uninstalled TB.

So far, I've only got three gripes which I can live with
for now

The Sorting Office/Filters has crashed three times today while I was creating filters. Since I have a dev environment installed, I was tempted to debug it but couldnt' be bothered.

I have a ton of emails and even in threaded view, I have to scroll some windows to get to the current. A method of grouping emails to group aged emails in a collapsed tree (like in TB) would have been great. e.g my really old folders have a single collapsed tree named Old Mail and which is auto-created by TB. Other folders, depending on the age of the emails, have Old Mail, Two Weeks Ago, Last Week etc. If I want to read old mails, I just expand the Old Mail tree and close it when I'm done. I don't have to scroll up lots of emails to get to them. I probably need to experiment with The Bat! view options to see if I can do the same thing. Any tips are highly appreciated as they would save me the trouble.

I can't, for the life of me, find a Reply-All option. What am I missing?

All in all, I like it. Its clean, it seems efficient and its zero bloat. Its all email. Lean, mean and clean.

Still awaiting my registration info though. I guess everyone in Russia is still in bed.
(More or less the same as I explained in my previous message, trhough I'm using more words now, I hope that this clears things up for you.)

=============

OK, since this is turning into a pointless argument and a battle of wits, let me try an make things more clearer and from a layman's pov instead of a developer's.

excerpt from the docs

====code====

The Bat! can easily import messages from other e-mail programs you may use.

1. Go to Tools -> Import Messages -> Mailbox Import Wizard

2. Choose the appropriate program to import from

3. Follow the on-screen instructions

If the desired program is missing from the list:

1. Open your other e-mail program

2. Export all messages into MSG, EML, or MBX files

3. Go back to The Bat! and select Tools -> Import Messages ->

4. Select message type from #2 above and follow the import instructions

=============

Given the above...

Nowhere in the docs does it say that the import wizard adds folder structures as opposed to individual messages.

Nowhere in the docs does it say that you need an account selected in order to use the import wizard.

Nowhere in the docs does it say that there is a difference between using the import wizard (on an account) and using the other import options (on a pre-existing folder)

Since The Bat! defaults to selecting an account on startup, when you follow the instructions in the docs, you are already at account level so the instructions will fail because you have no way of knowing that in order to use the []other[/i] options, you have to be a folder level.

I found out how to actually do it after much tinkering.

Apart from that, when I exported an email folder from TB and ended up with the .sbd files and imported them (as Unix), The Bat! mangled the emails and didn't do the import correctly. I had to manually export each individual mailbox (a painstaking process, given that I have almost 30+ individual folders!) and then import each one into The Bat! after having first created the subsequent folder in The Bat!

Nevertheless, I have registered the program and made the final switch from TB 2.0.0.6 since those Open Source guys seem to be focused on bloating the damn program with rubbish (who needs a news reader in an email program?) rather than fixing bugs (some of which go back to 2002) and getting basic functionality working. The same crap that is now plaguing Firefox (which I now use less and less, having started to use IE7 + the IEPro add-on).

So, you folks either need to explain clearly in the docs how importing works or change the program so that the appropriate settings are enabled when applicable.

====quote====

Maybe, The Bat! should have imported to Inbox (rather than disabling import options) if only an account and not folder is selected.
=============

There you go. At least someone understands what I'm talking about instead of trying to make me agree to flawed logic.

It does not _appear_ to be inconsistent. It _is_ inconsistent.

If the import wizard is supposed to import a folder structure, why then would the import Unix emails (and other formats which _do_ support folder structures) not be enabled as well?

So, if I have successfully exported all my email folders as Unix format (the TB default), I can't then use the import wizard to import them. Why? because I have to select a folder, as opposed to selecting an account.

In TB, there is an extension which allows you export an entire folder structure. So, that being the case, wouldn't it be consistent for _that_ option to be enabled in the event that you have an account (not a folder) currently selected? I think so. It just makes sense.
It may be confusing as it apparently confuses you.
It even might appear inconsistent, but it's dictated by necessity.
The import wizard imports a folder structure, therefore an account needs to be selected, as TB should know where the folder structure needs to be placed.
The other import options place the contents of a single location into a folder, therefore a folder needs to be selected.
Yes, but common sense would dictate that if you can't import it with the account name selected, why then would *any* import option be available? huh?

If you have an account name selected, only the import wizard is enabled.

If you have an account folder selected, all the import options - including the wizard - are enabled.

As a software programmer myself, thats confusing to the end user and is inconsistent. Go ahead, tell me I'm wrong.

Unable to import emails from Thunderbird

			Disregard. Looks like you have to have a mailbox selected in order for the those import options to be enabled. Thats odd I think and I only came across it by accident.
I've had it with TB. After upgrading to 2.0.0.6 and losing some of my email (had backups), I've decided to move.

I downloaded the eval version of The Bat! Home edition, installed it, checked email etc. It all worked.

But I can't import my TB mailboxes because the Tools/Import Messages option only has the mailbox wizard available. All other options (including the Unix option) are Greyed out.

So how can I import my TB email? I am using Vista Ultimate.
