Actually, it doesn't export the first contact to vCard, but all of them to a single file. (Look at the size of the file.)

To export a selection, you should select:
Export to -> Export selection...

When I export a vCard to a file, it doesn't export the item that is selected.  For example, I select Sam Jones in the address book, export to a vCard, and when I open it up, it's Alyssa Aaron (always the first person in my address book).
