The problem I was having in sending mail with 4.014 seems to have disappeared with 4.018. I don't know how, since the issue isn't mentioned in the 4.018 changes reported in another forum thread. Anyway, it's certainly good news, as I like the much lower resource usage of v.4 compared with v.3. When running in the tray, v.4 uses only about 2Mb of memory on my system, compared with 16Mb for v.3.

Running Vista Home Premium/TB 4.0.14.

TheBat! appears nolt to properly register itself with Vista; therefore (I think), MAPI from other programs (like SnagIt) fail.

TB fails to appear in default programs, etc.

All was well prior to v4.

Marek I couldn't agree more with you! I "upgraded" to v4 a few days ago and regretted it immediately.

Although I followed up with 3 more "upgrades" in the next few days I still had more problems then I could stand. I am now sure that V4 is in reality at a beta stage at best. Too many problems even for an old user/fan like myself (since TB 1.x).

I really think that Ritlabs should have waited a bit more before releasing v4. What is the hurry for releasing a new version with so many serious problems?

I am now back to the last v3 and will not be "upgrading" for a long time yet I think.

from my personal life, except The Bat!, I am not upgrading apps I am using everyday immediatelly when new version comes up - allways I am waiting some versions until vendor releases some bugfix postreleases. This is beceuase I wrote in previous message.

as in every other app, The Bat! has bugs and even in final versions, it is impossible to do it bugree for anybody. I must say, there are no critical like I had in one firewall with BSODs etc.

Windows is not a closed system, every user can has different set of other HW, different set of SW, different set of patches and different set of drivers. And there are different Windows versions and every is different.

Betatesting is done on hundreds of computers and as You can imagine, bugs can be found when is app spread to ten thousands or hudred thousands of computers... So bugs are hunted now and solved in postreleases.

A lot of bugs have been fixed since 4.0.7. There are still some issues on SOME systems. Vista still has some issues such as not properly registering mailto: although it works fine on XP. They are in the process of working that out. (This means that if you click on an email address on (say) a web page it won't load in the bat - again a VISTA issue)

If you have the time for beta testing, join TBBETA and get the latest fixes as they come out.

I have now v4.0.7 installed. I was about to upgrade to v4.0.14, but did not yet.

Is it really so that v4.0.7 is more stable than v4.0.14 ?
Because v4.0.7 i'm using now is working like a charm - spell checking, mail sending, everything. i have absolutely nothing to whine about it.

Could somebody who have tested both versions please leave a comment?  Thanks in advance...

edit: my OS is Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

Did this behavior START with 4.0.14? As soon as you installed it or had it been running ok and the program closing is something that just started?

I got so upset with a problem that I quit the bat and bought another email program. I kept running into limits and many things that weren't possible (it did have a couple of nice features)

Just for fun I googled "the bat 4.0.14" and got 616,000 hits. That is amazing. How does one interpret this? If the program is still not stable and giving people headaches, is this not going to hurt Ritlabs? I do not know, but it sure makes my question above somewhat more relevant. No?[QUOTE]

But now, i am invited to upgrade my profesionnal version of The BAT, which i accept, and then paf....for the last last 3 days the newest verstion 4.0.14..is flawed...when i try to email something,  the program just close itself....i am not an happy camper...someone could help...if by monday night max, this thing is not resolv. No doubt, i switch...i need something reliable here...

I use theBat for years, since v1.62r
So far I used only two versions - 1.62r and 3.85.03

TB is no doubt the most powerful pop3 client available, but it's a bit tricky about updates - it looks like new features are never tested extensively, but the developers release them and count on users feedback to fix the issues in later builds.

That's why I never upgrade to a newer version just because it exists (not only for TB but for any important app I use daily).
If the new version doesn't have new features or improvements I care of, I ignore it. If it does, I wait for a couple of monts before testing it extensively, and only then I may eventually upgrade.

Brian is right that there is no reason to upgrade to v.4 at the moment, there is nothing new and *really* important in it. Currently v4 is beta quality, at best - there are 14 new builds in less than 14 days, which means issues are fixed on the fly without whatever testing.

Acc. to my experience one may update theBat without extensive testing if there is no new version released in the last 2 months, and than there are no posts about problems with the last version for more than a month in this forum. If any of the above conditions isn't met, better wait.

I can see no reason to upgrade at the moment, except that v.4.0.14 uses less memory when running in the tray, as reported in the Softpedia review (confirmed on my system). As regards functionality, I'm very happy with 3.99.

If this was a Beta release I could understand these issues... but this is a full release version of the program.   I posted elsewhere about the issues with the 4.0.x series and would like to hear what users think about waiting for the right moment to upgrade..  How do we know when the right time has arrived to do so?  We cannot rely on Ritlabs.  

Any thoughts anyone?

The idea of having to select a particular spellcheck setting in order to be able to send mail at all is ridiculous. Mail should be sent unproblematically using whichever settings the user prefers.

I think this an issue - how big or critical everyone has to decide him/herself.

Actually, the spell check wasn't that good before, now it is even worse. There is NO way to switch from SSCE to CSAPI, Hunspell (as the huns would spell?) is disabled completely.

When I Cancel the spell (before send), there is no dialogue as it was - no way to send the mail directly.

Please give us a Notes-like button 'Send as is' in the spell check dialog.

I agree with Johnny that this is an issue.  In my day I often compose and send emails without looking at the screen.  This feature was a requirement when I was looking for an Outlook replacement.
I love your application and this will not affect my dedication to The Bat.
To Johnny: here are a couple of changes I am making to make life easier for me.  First of course I turned off “check before send”.  I changed my key for send, Ctrl+Enter to check spelling. I also added check spelling in the tool bar beside the send icon.  Hope this helps.
I have been using the check before sending option for many many years with Outlook and then The Bat.  With progress sometimes adjustments need to be made.  But I hope that this is only temporary.

This is a bug in the 4.0.X series when using the HTML editor.  The "check before send" spelling option will only check then send in the plain text editors - not the html editors.  As noted, if you disable the check before send option, the emails will send fine.

Set TB to 'Automatic Checking' in stead of 'Check before send/queue' That will set it to check the spelling while you type, IMO a much better moment than checking when you want to send.

Try sending a test message and letting it check the entire document as it was when it was failing but also when in the spell checking menu, check and see if 1) you have a language chosen and 2) have dictionaries. Don't worry about what is in there at this point as long as you see some dictionaries

I just upgraded to the new TheBat Professional 4.0.14, and now when I press the "Send" it starts spell checking, then nothing happens.

I now removed "Check Spelling Bfore Sending" and now I can send email.

You have a major bug in the Spell Checker.

This is critical!!!!!!!!!!!
