The SAFEST way would be to back up the entire folder where the mail resides which would include logs and address books. Depending on your login account name and assuming you are on windows and haven't moved your default mail folder it will be something like:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Rick\Application Data\The Bat!"

Close the bat while you do this as some programs won't back up files that are open/in use.

I don't like risking my message base, and want to know if a backup from 4.x will work on an earlier version in case I don't like it and downgrade again :-}
