After doing some digging I found that the files were encrypted with Windows EFS (Encrypted File System). The only way to decrypt them was with an EFS recovery utility. Once the files were decrypted I could point TheBat! to them and I was back in business.

I goofed! The files are not encrypted using TheBat!'s built in encryption. They are encrypted using WinXP's "advanced file attributes". Using Vista if I un-check the encryption attribute on the data, only the folders are decrypted. The files give an access denied error.

Are you using OTFE for your new setup?
Use the same password on your new system.

In case you don't want to disturb your current setup of TB, create a new account under Windows.
Copy your old message base to C:\Bat
Start TB
As this is the first time TB will be run on your new user account, TB will ask you whether to use encryption and whether to use a backup or a new account.
Go for encryption (same password as on your old computer) and new account: mail directory should be C:\Bat and account name should be the same as it was before.

I started a support ticket with RitLabs. They said to do the same thing you suggested Roelof and it would have worked except that the files are encrypted. (This is an option during installation of TheBat!.) I'm waiting for the next word from them now but it looks like I may be out of luck. If I had done periodic backups, I wouldn't be in this bind. Guess I've learned my lesson.

I haven't got a Vista system available right now. But TB should be able to place it's mail anywhere. Why don't you create a directory C:\Bat and drop the contents of your old mail directory there.
Next thing to do is to tell TB that your new mail directory is C:\Bat
Options -> Preferences -> System -> Mail Directory

As you stated the data resides on the old WinXP drive in

The default data location on the new Vista drive is C:/Users/your login/AppData/Roaming/TheBat!
When I attempt to copy the files to the new folder Vista complains "Destination Folder Access Denied" even though I'm logged in as admin and I own the folder. I've been googling for an answer to the access denied problem for a couple hours without success. Evidently this is a common problem.

I would install the Bat
It will install under Program Files (of course) but will create the data under "documents and settings/your login/application data/the bat"
Find that then close the bat
find it on the old hard drive and copy the files into that directory
Reopen the bat and all should be well

My motherboard died so I bought a new computer. I have my old harddrive connected to the new computer via an external USB enclosure. I can access the harddrive and all my files and everything are intact. How can I transfer TheBat! data to the new computer so that I don't loose everything? The old installation was version 4.0.11 on Windows XP. The new platform is Windows Vista Ultimate.
