I'm from the old IBM school of thinking: no cute names, BUT I like the uniqueness of "The Bat!", especially knowing that an appropriate O'Reilly cover inspired it.

Also I've seen many well known companies fade into oblivion after changing their names, it's usually a bad idea.

TYhe problem with name change is just that people do not like change, plus and mose powerful the Bat has built years into becoming what they are the best that there is in the email business. Go ahead make comments but love them or hate them Microsoft is king and everyone knows the name!!

Long live the bat!! It's earned its reputation I for one would use NOTHING else

The name of the program comes from the O'Reilly's book on e-mail protocols.

O'Reilly has a habit of decorating it's books covers with pictures of animals.

IT people often refer to those books by the animals, for example, the "TCP/IP Network Administration" is called "the crab book".

The bat was pictured on the cover of the book that inspired the Ritlab's team.

Ps. the Bat! is very widely used client in Windows platform, the next right after microsoft's programs.  If you haven't met any the Bat! users except we here, you just don't know right people

Well, yes and no. T & C is still available but they also Intellect. And from their site:

"We have an award winning contact manager called Time & Chaos, sold since 1991, and have taken all the features from it and added it to Chaos Intellect."

So, in essence they combined two previously separate programs, Time & Chaos and Express Plus, into a new package called Intellect.

AFAIK "Time & Chaos" is still "Time & Chaos", their app "Express Mail" was changed to "Chaos Intellect"...

It *may* be too old, but I'm not sure about being too well established.

In all my years of computing, except for this forum, I've never once met another The Bat! user, either in person or on-line.

Now that I think about it, I'm not even sure it's too old. I use a contact manager called "Time & Chaos". A while back they somewhat changed the program AND changed the name to something like "Intellect".

Personally, I think Thunderbird, Outlook and even Poco sound much "better" thank "The Bat!".  

You know, I even feel "weird" when I tell people the name of my e-mail program is "The Bat!"!

I love The Bat! and have for many, many years. Without question, it is the most powerful e-mail program available.  The Bats! is just phenomenal, with one exception, the name!

The Bat! is just a silly name and does almost NO justice to the program's sophistication. I imagine many corporate entities are turned away from the program simply because of the name.

Does anyone know if the developers ever consider changing the programs' name?
