Tabs have been 8 spaces since the days of the typewriter. But suppose you set yours to 4 characters, and you send someone an email that contains a table that you've centered by indenting the lines with 7 tabs (7x4=28 chars on your screen). The recipient uses standard 8-char tabs though, and on his screen your table will be aligned to the 56th character position, which is way too far to the right. That's the sort of problem that you would get by deviating from the standard.

Say it ain't so! I can't believe that this tab spacing is not changeable. There must be a "hack" for this, right??

How can I reduce The Bat from tabbing 8 spaces to 5 spaces?
