reply from developers:

This one cannot be fixed if writing the registry is disabled because there is no other way to store associations.
I do want the Bat! to:
1) be the default e-mail client;
2) check it really is the default one;
3) be associated with all those filename extentions.

I guess you have set theBat already not to check if it's default at startup
( Options / Preferences --> Applications )

If so, and it still checks that, the problem is likely with registry permissions.
Start regedit and search for keys named "RIT". For each such key, right-click it, select Permissions and make sure limited users have full control. Or, add 'Everyone' and set full control for Everyone.

You may additionaly set to 0 all the values under
..\RIT\The Bat!\ key which name starts with Check

Not sure if this becomes effective immediately, you may have to reboot (or kill & start explorer.exe process, this will reload user registry without a reboot)
What exactly you expect setting theBat as a default mail client to result in?
I expect it to stop bugging me with the notice that it's NOT associated with the list of filename extentions, and with the error message about not being able to re-associate - on each start-up.

If I promote my regular account to the Admin group - the bugging stops, when I downgrade my account back to LUA - the bugging commences.

By the way - the registry is already like that: "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\thebat.exe" /nologo /o:"%1"
the registry change above works for XP SP3 limited user accounts, at least on my PC.
What exactly you expect setting theBat as a default mail client to result in?

That's all irrelevant...

Regarding the "non-default" bug: there is a ticket from ~2008.march, the bug is known and confirmed by the developers. They say they simply have no time to fix it...

I wish they would test the Bat! from a non-administrative account before releasing.

theBat may not be able to set itself, but you should be able to set it manually.

Have you tried via
Control Panel/Internet Options/Programs or
Control Panel/Add or remove programs/Set programs access and defaults

If you only need theBat to handle mailto: links, I think it's enough to edit the registry
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command
Set (Default) to
"C:\Program Files\The Bat!\thebat.exe" %1

If none of these works, make a registry snapshot.
Set some other program as default, but not OE. Make a new registry snapshot. Then compare snapshots to see what has to be changed, and modify paths to point to theBat.

Just updated to the v4.0.38 - alas, the same misfeature still: it is not settalble as the default e-mail client for a non-administrative account (on winXP-SP3).
