====quote====
it seems the error frequency arises the bigger an email actually is.
=============

I can confirm this observation. This is a real problem with The Bat and may force me to go back to using outlook again, which in testing doesn't give me this kind of problem at all
I'm running 4.1.11 and face the very same error.

It doesn't matter if AV is on or off nor if the ISP has some max size per email set but as it seems the error frequency arises the bigger an email actually is.

e.g. a 3 MB email errs sometimes at below 1 MB, sometimes after 1.6 or 2 MB...there's no - at least visible - specific hook which causes the error.

Christian
I had the same problem when I tested out 4.1.3, so it put me off upgrading for now.

Avira initially detected thebat.exe as a virus, but I added it to the ignore list.

Went back to 4.0.34 and no problems sending SMTP. Also I did not have to change or disable AV scanner.
Looks like an interfering virus scanner.

Try to disable scanning outgoing mail in your virus scanner and see whether that solves the problem.
I have changed from The Bat! 4.0.38 on Windows XP to a new computer with The Bat! 4.1.11 on Windows Vista Home Premium on a new and more powerful computer.

When I attempt to send emails with attachments I usually get a message saying

Message has not been sent. Server reply -

The Connection Centre shows this:

sending mail message(s) - 1 message(s) in queue
connected to SMTP server
authenticating (software CRAM-MD5)...
sending message to ,email address>

During the sending attempt, the progress bar on the Connection Centre window seems to fill very quickly. There is then a long pause.

Afterwards, the log shows this:

02/03/2009, 13:27:15: SEND - sending mail message(s) - 1 message(s) in queue
02/03/2009, 13:27:18: SEND - connected to SMTP server
02/03/2009, 13:27:19: SEND - authenticating (software CRAM-MD5)...
02/03/2009, 13:27:19: SEND - sending message to <email address>
!02/03/2009, 13:27:35: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply -
!02/03/2009, 13:27:35: FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent were: "DATA", "RSET")
02/03/2009, 13:27:35: SEND - connection finished - 0 message(s) sent
02/03/2009, 13:27:35: SEND - Some messages were not sent - check the log for details

However, the email and attachment are usually sent, but I have no way of telling whether or not that has happened.
Indeed, as that's the version I'm running.

After restarting The Bat after the access violation I got the "usual" "DATA", "RSET" error again and unfortunately I'm still unable to send that email with the attachment
I'm running NOD32 v2.7 and the latest version of Outpost Firewall Pro. I've just tried sending the email with NOD32's email scanner disable/enabled but I've still got problems. Just to be sure I've just send an email with an attachment of just 313 KB. However, the same problem occurred which I never had with the v3 versions of The Bat:

27/01/2009, 08:50:23: SEND - sending mail message(s) - 1 message(s) in queue
27/01/2009, 08:50:23: SEND - connected to SMTP server
27/01/2009, 08:50:23: SEND - sending message to ...... and others
!27/01/2009, 08:52:54: SEND - Message has not been sent. Server reply -
!27/01/2009, 08:52:54: FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent were: "DATA", "RSET")
27/01/2009, 08:52:54: SEND - connection finished - 0 message(s) sent
27/01/2009, 08:52:54: SEND - Some messages were not sent - check the log for details

The smtp log ends again in this way:

[08:52:53] C: ------------C11112412B448980--
[08:52:53] C:
[08:52:53] C: .
[08:52:54] C: {2331 bytes sent}
[08:52:54] C: RSET

I would be grateful if someone could show me how to resolve this problem.
The SMTP of my ISP rejects mail with attachments over 1MB on principle, no matter what mailer is in use. The limit seems to be a leftover from low-bandwidth days.

My work ISP has no such limit, but mail with attachments over 1MB is much more likely to disappear or be delivered with attachments stripped.
I have the same problems as soon as I want to send an email with an attachtment. I can't sent any email with an attachment of say 1MB. These always end in this error message:

FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent were: "DATA", "RSET")

Like Peter Mack, nothing has been changed except TheBat, which runs on WinXP-SP3.

I've checked the smtp log and I see the following sequence:

TB: DATA
Server: 354
TB: sending the message
[13:08:51] C: ------------8BB0E822679C2B--
[13:08:51] C:
[13:08:51] C: .
[13:08:52] C: {2749 bytes sent}
[13:08:52] C: RSET

The Server: 354 command seems to be lacking after the attachment has been sent. Hopefully there is a solution to be found because I need to send attachments frequently.
You didn't change you virus scanner?
Does it happen with short messages and long messages alike?

The proper sequence for those commands is:
TB: DATA
Server: 354
TB: sending the message
Server: 250
TB: RSET
Server: 250
TB: QUIT

Could you enable protocol logging for the smtp protocol and check where things go wrong?

V4.1.9 SMTP sending often fails Intermittent "Connection to host broken" problem. in forum The Bat! - Configuring the E-mail Client.
Since upgrading to 4.1.9 (I don't remember it happening with 4.0.38 but perhaps it did. Certainly I don't remember it ever happening with V3.X) I frequently find sending messages fails with the following log event:

FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent were: "DATA", "RSET")

If I try and try it eventually goes. Sometimes it seems to help if I close and restart The Bat. This happens most if not all days, but not every time I send email. Usually the progress bar shows that some but not all the message has been sent, the amount varies.

The ISP, Router, PC, Email host etc are all unchanged.

Anyone else having this problem or any ideas on a solution.

Thanks
