9(7) means 9 messages in the folder and 7 messages in the subfolders of that folder

When no messages are displayed that might have different reasons, but the way to solve it is by pressing Ctrl+= or by selecting from the menu:
View -> Display -> All messages

Hello, I only recently acquired the Bat for my emails and being a novice with it I would really welcome some advice.

At the top of the tree in the column headed "Unread" it tells me that I have 6 unread messages. Under the column headed "Total" it shows the number 30.

In my Inbox in the "Unread" column it tells me I have 6 messages, but in the Total column, it shows 9(7) (all in Bold font)

However, in the message pane, the screen is blank and there would appear to be no messages for me to view but if I hover the mouse pointer over the message pane it briefly shows "9 messages total, 0 messages shown"

What is all that about and if, as I suspect, it means there are still some messages for me to view, how can I make them viewable?
