Help with error when backing up? in forum The Bat! - Configuring the E-mail Client.
I tried importing the MESSAGES.BCK renamed as MESSAGES.TBB on my system and it still gives "0 message(s) converted". Maybe we need some kind of utility to repair uncompressed backup message files that won't import. Would it help if I sent a clip of the first couple mails in the file to someone to be examined? Could it be something in the first gibberish line that's preventing us from importing the mails? Or something missing?
The messages are plainly readable just like viewing source in the BCK file, but whether named BCK or TBB, I can't get messages imported yet (though I haven't tried importing into my own system yet, I'll try that and exporting next if it will import).
IIRC It used to be possible to rename a messages.tbb to messages.uue and open it with WinZip (only WinZip, I haven't seen it with other archivers) and that would show all messages as separate files. Unfortunately the attachments were seen as separarte files too.

However you could try that with your messages.bck file. I can't give any guarantee though, as I've never had any of those .bck files myself.
I just tried copying a portion of the 277mb file into a new file (40mb) but importing still resulted in "0 message(s) converted", no import.

I left off the gibberish at the beginning, is this part important to TheBat! or what?
====quote====
y                 !	p0
=============
}In EditPad Pro it shows me a bunch of block characters that I don't see here.
Didn't work, it says "0 message(s) converted" (I know there's messaged in there, I can see them in Wordpad). I also tried .MSB but it just went to using 50% CPU (and not responding) and never did a thing, so I had to shut it down since it had no cancel on the import.

Is it possible to copy parts of the file (blocks of messages) to another to import or are there codes hidden between the messages that mean something?
Rename the messages.bck file to message.tbb, store it in another location and try to import from it.
More trouble. I had done the folder maintenance on my system and it appears to have fixed my problem with the automatic backup. I reset the backup time to a minute after I did the repair and it went through without the error this time. But when I tried on Dad's system it wiped out his whole Inbox.

We do have a MESSAGES.BCK from this morning but I can't get any messages restored from it into the folder, even trying to copy/paste it as MESSAGES.TBB or MESSAGES.TBK. As .TBB, it doesn't see the mails in the folder (yes, I did the copy/paste after shutting down TB). As .TBK, it says it's not a valid backup (apparently .TBK is compressed somehow).

With the MESSAGES.BCK copied to MESSAGES.TBB, when I try the folder maintenance again it just wipes out the file from 277MB to 4KB
What exactly is TB doing in this automatic backup that it isn't doing when we shut down? For this task it's saying "...while storing data of the folder Inbox." while at shutdown it says "compressing" and has no problem.

Would a screenshot of my folders help in figuring out the problem? I've seen no reply yet about the question of whether subfolders in INBOX bothers it or not.

Those of you with this same problem, do you also have subfolders in INBOX or do you have just messages in it?
I just deleted a couple messages from INBOX and manually compressed it. About 1/3 to half way through the progress bar, it stopped and said there's no deleted messages to compress.
On shutting down TB doesn't create a backup, but it purges and compresses your folder according to your settings.

Purge: In your folder settings you can set a maximum number of messages and a maximum age for messages and you can set whether any exceeding messages should be deleted on exit.

Compress: When TB deletes a message it doesn't remove it from the message base, it merely marks it as deleted as dleting would mean the whole message base for that folder should be written all over again. TB isn't unique is this way, it's rather common for mail clients and databases.
On compressing the message base is written anew, but now without the deleted messages.
Is this automatic backup any different than whatever The Bat! does when shutting down? I don't get the error messages when shutting down, only when auto-backup happens, and only on the Inbox folder.

Does it make any difference that the other folders are inside the Inbox? Other folders with subfolders don't have this problem, so I wouldn't think so. And my second account doesnt' have this problem either, though the other folders aren't in its Inbox folder either.
Create a new folder and copy older messages from your problem folder to that new folder.
When the copying is finished, delete all messages from the inbox and run maintenance on all folders.
(Folder -> Maintenance center -> ...)

The manitenance thing might help your dad too.

And just to be sure, for the both of you, before you start experimenting: make a copy of your mail directory (and its subdirectories)
I'm getting this same error, "An error occured while storing data of the folder Inbox..." and I also have tried deleting the tbi file with no noticeable change in the results. it does seem to finish the backup though, as it goes through all the other folders too.

Dad on the other hand has another broblem with backing up, it just sits there doing nothing, the progress bar siting forever at about 20%.
- make sure the backup file destination folder is not read-only and the dest. drive has enough space.

- create a new folder like _Inbox and move most of the old Inbox messages there, then try again

Finally you may backup everything by simply zipping the whole 'Home Directory' folder - all your messages, account settings, filters etc. are there.
TB also keeps some stuff in the registry but these seem to be temporary non-important settings.
Hi there, whenever I try to backup my files, it gives me this error:

"An error occured while storing data of the folder Inbox. It is possible that message index file is damaged - try to delete the index file and re-read the folder, then back"

Well, I've already done this:

a) deleted all .tbi files
b) proceeded to go into each and every 1 of my Inbox(yep, all the messages are still there, I believe)
c) went through the backup process again(but the same error appeared.)

Anyone can offer some help on this? :/
