Did you do a purge&compress after the messages had been deleted?

Highlight the folder
Menu: Folder
Item: purge & compress.

Hi there,
when I made a preventive backup before cleaning (deleting) emails I did not need anymore, the file size was about 166mb for lets say 200 emails + attachments.
Up till here: no ploblems.
But then, after I cleared most of my mails I had about 20 left. All of them without attachments.
Now, when I made a backup with just those 20 emails, the filesize of the backup was still 156mb. How can this be possible?
