Ignore the above, after I posted I had a brainwave and ran the Maintence Centre which fixed the problem.

I just upgraded to the latest version (home edition) and restored from a backup as my hard disc had crashed. Looked fine until I tried to delete individual messages and fond that I couldn't. I'm running 64bit Windoes 7, and I had no problems before the upgrade from I think 4.19.
