No, I'm not saying that you can't convert your mailboxes to 4.1+, but merely that the backups by older versions can't be read by the newer versions. That's because the index files have been changed. And some people don't install the new version on top of the old version, but do an uninstall and install the new version while restoring a backup and that won't work. Simply installing the new version over the older version will do just fine.
Hi Roelof,

Thank you very much for your reply. It's not an ideal solution, but better than saving everything. I have used The Bat for a few years now and plan to keep using it. But are you saying that I won't be able to convert my mailboxes to the next version above mine (4.1+)? That would be a real bummer. I'm going to download and install the newest version today, and we'll see what happens.

Thanks again,
Bill
I forgot your second question.
That's how I read the statement on <noindex>http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/download.php</noindex>
But I've read on one of the lists that the new keys will only be valid for v4.2.38.6 (and up) as the key format has changed and 4.2.38.4 and lower won't recognize them, so you'll need to change versions after upgrading even when there's no v5 available. And remember that backups created by v4.0 can't be read by v4.1 and higher.
You cannot turn off the saving of sent mail.
However there are two ways to manage your problem.
First option is to create an outgoing filter that triggers on all messages and set that to delete the message, that way all messages will be deleted after being sent. No exceptions for messages that you'd like to save.
Second option is to set a maximum number of messages in the properties of the sent mail folder.
Set the maximum to 50 messages or 30 days (or both) at the 'additional' menu of the folder properties. Also enable 'remove old messages' and 'compact folder' on exit. That way you've got time to decide to keep some messages for a longer time (in a different folder)
Keep in mind that each folder has its own properties set, so you can set a maximum number of messages for every folder.
Hi everyone,

I'm running v.4.0.18 of The Bat and I can't seem to figure out how to disable the automatic saving of outgoing mail. I want to be able to choose, for each outgoing email, whether it should be saved or not. If that's not possible, I would at least like to turn off auto-saving. My outboxes are getting huge and it's a pain to pick through them to delete the most useless of the saved messages, so I'd rather be able to toggle the saving of them. Can you help?

Also, if I buy an upgrade now, will I have access through version 6? That is my understanding.

Thank you for any help anyone can provide.

Bill
