4.2.44.2 view modes gone faulty?

Spent an hour fiddling with view settings and I still cannot get the Today view mode to work as it has done for years. I could go to Folder View Mode and toggle any folder to show JUST messages received today. Now all folders just display ALL messages going back years. Thread sorting and stuff like that still works though. I am finding it hard to find recent e-mails, or e-mails that are part of a thread started days ago, as they can be buried miles up the chain now. At a loss as to what has happened. Thanks.

I have folder view mode set to "Today" on many folders, but they all stay at a generic view mode. Setting global view mode to today as well makes no difference. As far as I know I haven't changed any relevant settings. Any ideas what may have occurred? Thanks.
