Download Message Bodies

When starting TheBat, new emails are downloaded and displayed, but only header information.  I have to wait upon clicking an email for the message body to load.  How do I get TheBat to download the entire message (minus external images)?

In the servers properties "Message download preferences" I have both "Download during periodical checks" and "Download on 'Receive new email' command" checked.  I also have both "Unread messages" and "Read messages" set to "Get entire message".  Yet this doesn't seem to work.

It seems that sometimes the messages are downloaded (albeit, very slowly), other times it doesn't download the message until it's clicked.

Check this:
Account properties -> IMAP commands -> Manage IMAP folders
That will give you a list how all folders (for the selected account) are configured to download the messages.
If one of them isn't configured as you prefer, select it and alter the setting with the download button.

In case all of them are configured as you want them to be, you could have some problems with your imap cache. In that case you could delete that and see whether that fixes your problem.
