portable

hello

I tried to install the portable TheBat, which is supposedly the "Voyager" (imo, it should just be TheBat Portable, but that's another discussion)

it asks me to choose a disk :/

what if I want to install it in a folder and then move that folder to another pc, or another disk drive, or another directory and make it work from there?

isnt this what portable is supposed to be?

thanks!

Portable in Voyager means that you install both Voyager and the message base both on a removable medium (usb-stick or external hard disk)
That way you can plug your usb-stick with Voyager on any Windows PC and run it from there.
If you want to install TB on a PC and later move the message base to a different PC  and install TB there, that's no problem whatsoever, that's the way I've switched to new PCs every time since I've been using TB. (since 2000) That can be done with the regular TB.

thanks for your reply

however I am not quite sure I understood you 100% (for example, I dont know what "message base" is)

anyway, can you tell me how to have TheBat inside a specific folder, without writting anything elsewhere?
ofcourse, once for example, I choose it as my default email client, it will obviously write to registry, but that's something I control
TB should work independendly from that folder and always asking me if it needs to write something out of it or in the registry
also, TB should work whenever I transfer the folder to another directory or pc

I think this is the 'definition' of portable app

is it possible?

thanks

also, I should add that it's essential (at least for me) to easily update the portable TB, without any hassle and a chance to lose data

TB writes it data in two places:
1) In the mail directory
2) In the registry
The program itself is located in Program Files not in the data directories

Data in the registry is stuff like registration key, window sizes, location of the mail directory, number of accounts, etc
Stuff in the mail directory is stuff like message base (the collection of all of your messages), address book, account settings, filters, templates, etc.
The real data is located in the mail directory, my mail directory is about 10 GB, when exported the TB-section of the registry is about 71 kB.
You can decide for yourself where to place the mail directory, mine is placed in D:\Batmai\, but the default location is something like C:\Users and Settings\SomeUser\temporay\roaming\the bat!
Next version has to be installed on top of the old one and the new one will automatically recognize the settings as used for the previous version. By doing it that way I've still got mail from over 10 tears old.

so if I move TB folder to another pc, I will lose data? (I am talking about the data that is written to the registry and which is not about "window sizes" which I dont care about)

You can install Voyager in the root of a local or removable drive.

If you install it on a local drive, then you can move the entire Voyager folder into any other folder on that drive without having to activate the programme again.

Then you can also move the Voyager folder to any other local or removable drive, but each time the drive is changed you will have to re-activate Voyager. By default you have 3 activations via the key block and 3 activations by the order number. In case you run out of activations you will need to contact the support team asking for some more activations.

but I want to install it on a folder, not in the root of a local or removable drive!
and to be able to move it to any folder of any drive, without losing any data/settings! (activation is not an issue, since I don't plan to move it to more than 3 other drives)

First install in the root and then move it wherever you need.

My apologies for not understanding this but, if whenever Voyager (on a usb stick) is used on a different pc and needs reactivating, how does that make Voyager truly portable? For example, if I'm reading the above correctly, does that mean if I take Voyager on a usb stick overseas and want to use it on a hotel pc, I have to reactivate Voyager?

No, you got it wrong. Once you have activated Voyager on a USB-stick you can plug it into any computer and run without having to activate it again.

You need to activate Voyager only when you move it from one drive to another.
