I use several identities (that is, a 'from' and 'reply-to' combination) which are typically tied to specific mail folders. These work fine, but often I want to sel ect an identity to reply to, or send, a single email. For this I don't want to set up a folder just for one email, and neither do I want to change the default identity for the folder.

For instance, today I received an email to a throw-away email address I'd used for an online vendor. I need to reply to that using that throw-away address. The email is in the inbox, which contains stuff to my normal address and other one-off addresses. How can I change the 'fr om' and 'reply-to' fields for just this reply?

Sel ect the from field and type the alternate address.
For the reply-to the same thing works, bu you don't need to enter a reply-to when it's identical to the fr om address.

What 'from' field? In the reply editor, I get only To, CC, Subject and Tags.

Ah! Right clicking on a header  title pops up a dialog allowing me to select other headers. I tried right clicking all over the place, but only left clicked the existing headers. Duh!

Actually, on the pop-up header selector there is a selection 'Edit headers...' which, when clicked, takes me to Preferences | Viewer/Editor | Message Headers. There I can sel ect yes or no for editor/scroll/ address list. I had been there several times and saw that 'Fr om' was a yes for the editor. Currently, it has 'Organisation' as a yes, but that doesn't show up in the header list in the reply editor.

And I just disabled the tags field showin, but that continues to be a yes in the list for editor. Is there something amiss, here?

Yes - the scroll part is only used if you want to invoke several and scroll through them (try it)
Just reply to your message and RIGHT click on the TO:. CC:, or whatever header field and it will open a box to let you add others. The selection will stick until you DEselect it.

It's not the scroll column that is confusing me, but the editor column. A yes there suggests to me that the header field is shown in the editor, but in fact it is only potentially shown. I can't change that yes to a no, or a no to a yes, unlike in the scoll column where you can affect that.

The confusion for me is that this dialog seems to be where you can set things, but it is really an information display, and changing what you see is done elsewhere.

In the  OPTIONS you can actually CREATE header fields and set certain aspects of how it is displayed etc. (If you make something an address, you will be able to add it to the address book)  It is for OUTGOING messages and has no real effect on incoming messages and what is in their headers

In the generated message, the right click will let you select the ones to show. Try it. Pick X-SENDER if you always want to know what email device they were using (for instance)

Thanks. I see what you're saying, and if it was all based on this single screen I would agree with you that it makes perfect sense. But it is inconsistent with other preferences screens. For instance, the viewer mode is where you can change column settings, and those affect how you see things in the viewer. In the headers screen you can only add new headers and not affect any of your views.

Once you've twigged to this things you get used to them and wonder what the fuss is about because they don't bother you any more. But for a new user who is not hip to them, it is easy to trip over some of the stones that stick up (to mangle metaphors!).
