Using synchronise, Looking for more detail on what it does and how

I have The Bat! installed on a desktop machine and a laptop.  I may be interested in synchronising them depending on what it is and how it works.

I've read the on-line documentation but I am not clear about what it does.  I understand how to set it up but is synchonisation always initiated manually or does it occur automatically?

Has anyone run into any unexpected problems (e.g. damaging a file on one system then synchronising the damage to the other system?  

What are the "best practices" for synchronisation?

The best practice is to use IMAP
The Bat is not really designed for synchronization BUT you can keep your Data files on a USB stick and carry it with you OR if you have a Dropbox account you can move your data there and it will be ready to go when you move to your laptop

Thank you Rick.  The scant documentation on synchronisation made me wonder how whole-hearted the implementation is.  Your luke-warm enthusiasm confirms it is probably not the way to do what I want.

I think I will opt for daily Bat backups to Dropbox (or use Yadis or similar) instead.

I synch mine to dropbox too. The easiest way is to make a junction pint in the dropbox (or whatever) folder

I've always backed up to my hard drive and copied the file to my dropbox folder on my computer.

I'd prefer to backup to my dropbox folder direct but read somewhere that it's not a good idea since dropbox begins to sync as soon as any changes are made and with the backup constantly changing as its progressing dropbox won't safely, if at all, sync to cloud.

Is that correct?

It is probably not the best idea. I back mine up to another drive every 6 hours and have a junction point from there into my Dropbox folder
