Mark read at server when downloaded

Is there a way to mark an email on the server as read after downloading using POP? I can't find a way but thought I'd ask.

When I download from Gmail, Gmail marks the message as read.  I'm trying to accomplish the same action on my other web based email accounts which don't offer that feature so I was hoping I could get TB 6.8 to do it.

I deal with several and I would like TB to mark as read if possible.  I'm guessing it's not possible since I can't find a setting or download filter to do so.

I'm curious as to how those servers ever consider a message 'read'.

You could do this by using the Message Dispatcher, I think.

The POP protocol has no facility for telling the server "mark message as read". That doesn't really make sense in the POP world, which is based on the concept that when you download a message, you are making an independent copy. There's no concept in POP of coordinating the view  from different locations -- that's why IMAP was developed.

In fact, in the POP world, there's not even any concept of "looking at the message on the server", only of downloading messages. In POP, the server is just part of the message transport. Of course this does not fit the modern world -- again, the reason for IMAP. If there are POP servers which mark messages read when they are downloaded, then they are doing this as an extension to POP, not on command from the email client.

Thanks for the clarification on POP.  Gmail offers a setting to mark as read when downloaded but other web mails do not. I was hoping it was something that could be done withing TB but I wasn't too hopeful.

One thing I miss fr om a previous email client is the ability to actually view mail on a server wh ere it could be marked as read (or unread or delete, etc). It was accessed by a button on the toolbar.  I wish TB had that too.

I only use IMAP on my phone/tablet or on a computer when traveling. Other than that I use POP on my main computer because of personal preferences of POP over IMAP for permanent storage of emails from my 4 email accounts. Being able to mark them as read makes for less badge counts showing up on my cell phone. :-)
