SMTP stopped working

Hi, I'm using The Bat! v4.0.38 and my ISP is 1and1. I'm able to download (POP3) but SMTP is not working. I'm using port 587, STARTTLS, Perform SMTP Authentication, Require secure authentication.

My last successful sent message was May 31. Is there something I can do to get these going?

Thanks!

Unfortunately this appears to be the result of recent changes at/by 1and1.

If you understand German (or are willing to use Google Translate), go to https://www.batboard.net/index.php/Thread/13294-TB-4-2-44-2-kann-pl%C3%B6tzlich-keine-Mails-mehr-versenden-1-1/?pageNo=1

If you just want to be able to send emails again, upgrade to the most recent version of The Bat!.

Thank you. Ich kann es lesen ein bisschen (apologies for my rusty 1970s high-school German) but it looks like some people in that thread are having trouble with 7.1.18? Then I get lost in the language (haven't tried Google translate though).

I see I can upgrade for $19 (from Pro to Home) or $42 (from Pro to Pro), is there a way to install the upgrade and still be able to revert to 4.x if I don't like it? I think in the thread some people said just to install 7.1.18 right over the existing installation.

Thanks again!

That's right, but those who had issues with v7 were able to solve them. With the older version there appears to be no solution at all (at least at this time).

I'm with a different email provider so I can't share any first-hand experiences with you. However, a good friend of mine had the same issue, we spent about an hour trying to get an older version to work, and once he upgraded everything worked immediately.

If you have a spare PC somewhere, my suggestion would be to install the free TB! trial and check whether you can send emails. (If you consider installing the trial on your main system, be sure to first take a backup of everything.)

By the way -- some of the more recent messages in the link I gave indicate that 1and1 are getting quite a few complaints from disgruntled TB! users. I have my doubts whether TB!'s user base is large enough to reach "critical mass" from 1and1's POV, but if you can afford to wait for a few days...

Thanks, that's good info. My current version does what I want and I'm not sure the latest does much more (will have to pore over the feature list again, as I could be happy with an excuse to upgrade, even if only to the Home version). That said, I would of course prefer that 1and1 fix the problem whatever it is.

If it just stopped working ... Right Click on the account / Properties / Options and add a check to"Verbose Log" (Remember to uncheck it when you are done) Then try sending a few time before referencing the log to see if the information has any more details

You seem to be having trouble sending because of "authentication: That will be under Properties / Transport and you can fiddle with the settings there (take a screenshot of what it is BEFORE changing anything. You might have to contact the support people at 1&1 to see if they have made any changes

I've tried every combination I can find, and none of them work. Are you suggesting that upgrading to the latest version (as suggested above) isn't going to fix it?

For some reason, 1and1 don't offer online help only phone calls, so I'll need to make time to call them.

I don't if there was a better (cheaper) way to fix it, but I downloaded the latest version, purchased an upgrade license, installed over the existing installation, and as soon as I was up and running my emails went out. :)

Yes I did a full backup of the computer, and a TB! backup as well, before installing (not backwards compatible).

Thanks everyone!
