Mail Base Encryption

I've exported backup copy of mail folders and settings, uninstalled prevoius version of The Bat!, deleted keys from Windows Registry and The Bat! mail folders. I've started installing of The Bat! 3.02.10 Professional but there was no option to set to encrypt mail database.

I've tried this few times but the effect was the same. What should I do?

Nor admin doesn't know?  :(

isn't this a new feature in v.3.5 ?

You're supposed to get a question about wanting to use an encrypted mail base on installing TB fresh.

I uninstalled TB and installed it again and I got asked whether I wanted to use encryption. So I guess it works. When you don't get any questions about encryption then I suppose you haven't deleted every TB registry entry.

I have to admit that this was done with 3.5, but on the beta list several people were able to do it with 3.0.2.10

Please try 3.5.24 that we've released today, everything is fine with the encryption in this version.

how can I CHANGE to an encrypted mail database in a running installation? (just updated to 3.5.25)

I cannot find a switch anywhere...

Create  a full (internal) back-up of TB.

Uninstall TB

Install TB and you'll get asked whether you'd like to use an encrypted message base.

Restore your back-up

that was exactly what I wanted to _avoid_*! is there really no migration option?

more over: TheBat! tells me for each account that it uses plain text message bases... if it is an installation option, can it be only used overall? or would I afterwards be able to switch the on-the-fly-encryption for each account?

* PS: that may be a minor nuisance on a single system, but to do this in a companies' installation running around to each and every PC isn't that nice a thought...

Not that I'm aware of, I realize it's quite a pain to do this a lot of times, but blame Ritlabs, not me.

AFAIK It's not possible to use OTFE for some accounts and not for others.

well, it was not my intention, to blame anyone, espcially not you - but I saw Maxim (and probably more from Ritlabs) is reading here, too...

however - I tried the given procedure on a test PC and was asked for using the OTFE, but in two tries (once with the option "password" and once with "iKey") I still get an unencrypted message base and no error at all (nor was I asked to select an iKey or give an encryption password - all of this happened on a XP Pro SP2 machine)

so for now it sadly seems to NOT work at all (at least for my environment) :-(

nlkes, which version did you try? 3.5.25?

Previous versions might not work well with encryption.

yes, just downloaded it yesterday

two ideas:
  • the inital otfe-dialog looked a bit strange: at least two sentences were incomplete, but the options elements were clearly usable
  • the machine is using a multi-user environment - it seems that the uninstallation is only clearing the admin's account, but not the user's data. Maybe the installation/initialization is irritated by this? However it did not even work in the admin account...

All,

Ditto here (see my new post)
I can't get the email database encrypted, whatever option I tick. After the email restore it all seems to be still in open text (viewable in say notepad) ?
Have I missed something ?

There was a bug in The Bat! that it did ignore the OTFE initial question, but we've fixed it in 3.5.26: http://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/beta/thebat_pro_3-5-26.msi

First time in history about downgrading The_Bat (to 3.01) for two reasons:

- message encoding not working (maybe it is, but this discussion says something else - effectively it's disabled.. even after full disk/registry removal no such option i receive!)
- grouping is completely messed up. group to sender and you will not see first messages, just stupid empty lines. it means a LOT of wasted time when browsing mails!

I use some free version of PGPdisk to keep my emails secure, since TB 1.62
Have no idea how the TB integrated mail base encryption works, but I've never had whatever problems using PGPdisk for this purpose.

EDIT: argh... sorry - forget my first try from today ... I thought the newest post was atop and read the first message again misinterpreting the date...

however... has anyone verified this to be ok in the new version 3.60?!
