Need Help Configuring for AOL Mail, Can't Send Mail

I successfully configuring the bat! to access my aol mail via IMAP. It recieves the new mail fine, but for some reason I am unable to send mail. I looked at the settings and thought I set it up as I should but everytime I try to send an email I get a login or authentication error. I am not sure how to configure it, but i know it should work since it has worked in Outlook. If anyone could help me out I would appreciate it. -Rob

Have you tried to disable authentication for SMTP server?

I tried to disable it altogether and that still doesnt work. I can't seem to figure it out.

If you disabled SMTP-AUTH, what's the error message in log file (<Ctrl>+A and deactivating "Highlights only")?

The error is:
Server reports error. The response is: CLIENT AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED. USE ESMTP EHLO AND AUTH.

Actually I wasn't able to figure when you'd need SMTP-AUTH with your AOL account, the German AOL-Online-Help does not mention it.

So might it be you're not connected to the Internet using your AOL account when this error occours?

Have you had SMTP-AUTH activated in Outlook too? If so: have you compared the setting? Username and password are absolutely correct? CRAM-MD5 was activated or deactivated?

I looked at my settings in outlook. All I had to do was change the outgoing port to 587 (which i did in the bat!) and then I just clicked a box that says "My outgoing server requires authentification" and then a box is checked that says use the same settings as my incoming mail server.

Port 587? Quite unusual, but hey, we're talking about AOL :-)

Having a look at German AOL page (because I'm German and I wasn't able to find the appropriate help on English pages) I see no hint one should be enforced to change the standard port 25 to something different.

Would you mind setting your The Bat! IMAP account to port 25 for outgoing server and test again?
Both with and without SMTP-AUTH activated?

Can't test myself, due to lack of AOL account :-)

Ok. Did some Google work. Seems you're not alone, I've seen tons of people having problem using the AOL SMTP, even on port 587 and even using Outlook Express.

Maybe it helps if you enable STARTTLS plus SMTP-AUTH.  But that's a pure guess only.

Hello!
I have the same problem. Was it already solved by you?
