View Modes, How do I set up view modes

I have tried to set up view modes with no success. Some folders I would like to view simply in mail received order, others I would like to view by sender and received time. The setting UseBy seems to do nothing - I have a folder called TBUDL for messages on a mailing list, and I have set up a viewmode called TBUDL and set the UseBy to that folder. When I look at another folder and go back to the TBUDL it has nothing in the UseBy list and uses the same view mode as every other folder.

A simple example of how to make folders display in different ways just by going to that folder would be most welcome.

How do you pick the view mode?
There are two ways to go:

Folder -> Folder view mode -> pick one

and

Folder -> Properties -> Column setting

I'm always using the first method and I just checked, they weren't the same for my tbudl folder.

I may have cracked it - I assumed the Global View Mode worked for everything except the ones I selected - I suspect there should be NO global View Mode at all, just force each folder to have a specific View Mode.
