Many times selecting a message in the list does not load it.

Hi.

I've been a user since TheBat v9. My problem is, I press "F2" to load the list of new messages. They appear. But when I select a message, most of the time, the message does not load. Nothing happens.

I click on another message, sometimes nothing happens, sometimes that message loads and I can read it. Then I go back to the previous one which was not loading and then it loads and I can open and read it.

When v10 was out, I waited 1 year to be sure most bugs were ironed out and then upgraded to it.

But the same behaviour remained. :(

So YES I can select and read ALL my messages.

BUT each time, some messages are not loaded. Nothing happens when I select messages in the list. I must select 1, 2, 3 before the message I select can be loaded and read.

Sometimes at first attempt, the message loads up immediately. But most of the time not.

This happens either when I start the program, or even when the program is opened, and a few hours later I click on it in my taskbar, then press "F2", then:

- I select a message, it does not load. So I have to select another message, 1, 2 or 3 times in a row to be able to load one, then others usually open normally
or
- I select a message and it loads and I can read it.

Am I the only one experiencing that? Either Windows 10 or 11, same behaviour.

Is this something known?

TheBat is the only client doing that to me. Since the first day I tried TheBat, I experienced that. It has been a long time I wanted to talk about that, but postponed it and tonight, I write. :)

I will not upgrade to TheBat 11 to try to see if it is better. That is not an option.

Thank you for any help.

So you use an IMAP account, the messages reside on the server of your mail provider, and you download them manually (F2).

What you describe does not sound like a bug. I think you can improve things by tweaking some settings in The Bat, but additionally, maybe your internet connection is a bit slow, or your antivirus is intercepting the messages to scan them, or maybe your provider is a bit slow.. it's hard to tell from here, but maybe you can look into those things if improving the settings doesn't help.

As for the settings.. when you go to the Properties of your account, and look under Mail Management, Mail Management | Fine-tune, and Options, you can configure many behaviors including when The Bat will retrieve your messages (at startup and periodically, or only when you press F2, etc) and if it will retrieve just the header or the whole message. Hopefully The Bat will work better for you when you have optimized the settings.

One more idea: try setting the message viewer to display messages as text (first). CEF sometimes needs several clicks to "kick in".

If CEF is the culprit, a workaround could be to disable it using the /ForceNoCEF command line option. The alternative HTML viewer is not that bad actually. However, features implemented using CEF (Calendar, new Address Book interface, Conversation View, etc.) will not be available.
