A dialogue box keeps popping up with the title "Enter Login Data".

The fields are ID and Password, there's a tick box for Store the information in the Password Database

I can send and receive email, and my calendar appears to sync, so I have no idea which credentials I'm supposed to enter here or for what, although I've tried a few.

It's hard to deduce what's going on with little information about your setup, but here are some possibilities (Account -> Properties -> Transport):
- The password may not be entered
- Receive mail Authentication button, "Do not store password" selected
- Receive mail Authentication button, "Regular" used when it should be OAUTH (for example, for Outlook)
- Maybe you're using one account and the issue is with another
