New messages are not sent out

Hello, I am using thebat for several years email and have there a few accounts.

Fr om some time I have noticed that very often when I create a new message and then I want to send it out but the message is not sent.
Nothing happens.

In the meantime I have also noticed that if I do not minimize the window of a new message or I do not change the current window then the message will be finally sent out sometimes after a few seconds, sometimes after 15 seconds sometimes even close to 30 seconds.

I have a feeling that this is caused by the huge number of attachments gathered in the Attachment folder of the account. I have about 100 000 messages in the inbox and outbox. The account and the Attachmetns folder are stored at the network sever.

Please let me know if you have some suggestions what I can do about it?
If not then maybe you have an idea how to create a second folder with attachments wh ere I would be able to store older messages and with attachments? (I do not want to create a second account for older messages).

I use currently Windows 11 but it was the same at Windows 10 - The Bat 10.5.4. (POP3 emails)

If I understood correctly, instead of the accounts folder being on a local drive you keep it on a local network drive?

If so, first I need to say: you're asking for trouble :D I don't think TB was designed to be used that way. That's essentially what IMAP is for, and it is a safer option. But I understand the appeal of such a setup. In any case, make sure to do regular backups.

Having said all that, the mail data folders being on a network drive is what is probably causing the delays. Large mail folders can cause small delays even on a local drive, and I'm saying that from experience.

So, keeping the Inbox and Outbox small by moving messages to other folders should help. After the operation, run Folder -> Maintenance Center... and do a Check Integrity/Repair and Compact to get rid of deleted messages and make the folders truly small. Needless to say, do a backup of all account data first.

When you store attachments externally, you can set the storage folder separately for each account, but not for each mail folder within the account. So, I'm afraid that you can't keep attachments for Inbox, Outbox and Sent Mail separately if that's what you wanted.

If I had this problem, I would probably make a duplicate of the account (without the messages - just the definition and its folder structure) and name it "Old Mail" or "Mail 2000-2020" or something like that. I would use that to keep all my old messages and attachments in. I would change its settings so that it would never pick up or send out any mail (remove its passwords to be double sure). And of course I would also set it to use a new folder to store attachments.

When that is set up, I would move all old messages from the Inbox and Sent Mail folders of my real account to those of the new Old Mail account. Hopefully --I have never tried this!-- this will also cause the attachments to be moved over to the new storage folder!

If all has gone well, you can run the Maintenance Center afterwards to compact your folders.

Before doing all this, be sure to make a full backup of your mail and attachment folders, and be sure to count your messages before and after the operation to make sure that nothing is lost!

Thanks Miloš and Daniel for you comments and suggestions.

I know that the network drive can cause a delay however this kind of solution was working fine... until some time.

Regarding the separate account with the "Old Mail".
This solution works well because I use it for another eamil account for which every year I create a new account and copy the older messages to "Old Mail"account.
However I thought that there is some trick to split "Attachments" folder into smaller folders to still keep everything in one email account.
If there is no solution of this kind, I will use a separate account for older emails.

Once again thanks for your time and suggestions.

That would be great, but I'm not familiar with any option like that. That doesn't mean that it doesn't exist  8-), but I've never heard of it. Maybe you could ask Ritlabs' tech staff using the 'Support' menu above, or do a deep search of this forum using Google ("keyword1 keyword2 site:ritlabs.com").
