Agava Antispam Servant crashes The Bat

Hello,

I am a registered user of Agava Antispam Servant plugin for the Bat (2.1.6).

The  plugin  worked  great  for a few weeks but now it crashes The Bat mailer  every  time  it detect a spam or every time I manually mark as junk any email.

I  thought  it  was  a  problem  of  my old OS (windows 98) but I just upgraded  to  Win  XP  Pro  and  I  still  have  the  same bug. I also uninstalled  and  installed  again  Agava plugin and reset everything.
Always the same crash of The Bat. I also deleted my spam databases. Nothing.

My  Bat  version  is  3.62.14  professional  edition  that  I upgraded recently. Perhaps this plugin is not compatible with this last version of The Bat?

You can find below a txt file that have been generated after the crash which could help to find a solution

I tried to contact agava support twice but no answer...

I am using it in 3.63 betaversions, but used it more than month in 3.62.14 and without problem.

I also tried the last beta version and it always crashes. I sent 10 mails to Agava. They never answer!!! It's a shame for a plugin I paid.

Hello!

Rick, unfortunately we have no messages from you in our bugtracking system. If you didn't receive the confirmation letters from our email server, then there may be a problem with your SMTP server or somewhere else in a chain.

It seems that one or more configuration files are damaged for some reason. That can be the consequence of rebooting the working system or shutting down TheBat unexpectedly. Try to delete all configuration files from the plug-in directory:
<disk>:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\AGAVA TBP

Also, make sure that you have the latest version of the plug-in:

Any content-filtering "anti-spam" technology is crap.
DNSBL is the way to go.

I can't understand why people agree to pay for the spam-traffic?!
What is the point of using a "filter" if the spam is already downloaded?!

By downloading the spam and paying for the traffic required for that - you support spammers.
Otherways all ISPs would have turned them down long ago.

The problem is that the spammers are smart enough to bypass any existing simple methods like blacklists of IPs. E.g. here are the major reasons why DNSBLs are ineffective:
- Spammers are using thousands of zombie computers for sending millions of messages. Zombie is a usual computer connected to the internet (just like yours) and infected with a kind of trojan software. It is possible to ban the open SMTP relays or solitary hosts with static IPs, but blacklisting of zombie networks is much harder.
- The probability of false positives is too high and DNSBL providers often ban the normal hosts or even networks. E.g. someday you can find out that the messages you send don't reach the recipients. That may be a consequence of blacklisting the whole network of your ISP, because one of the clients sent out a bunch of spam messages. And you will be unable to do anything with that until your ISP will pay to DNSBL provider for removing the network from the blacklist.
The other "silver bullet" methods like SPF, Sender ID, YDK are virtually useless today because too many email servers don't support them. Some of the blacklists are good enough to filter out about 30-50% of spam messages with almost zero false positives and many email servers are using DNSBL filtering internally. The filtering of junk messages at server level using these methods for reducing the traffic is good, obviously. But only personal, trainable content-based methods can filter up to 99,9% of spam for saving your time and nerves. That is the main aim of our filter. Yes, the client-side filter doesn't reduce the traffic and the messages should be downloaded for analysis. The gains are - the best accuracy of classification and the ability to avoid losing the normal messages recognized as spam by mistake.

My position is clear: "Вор должен сидеть в тюрьме!", spam should not be downloaded.

If ISP does not want to implement GREYLISTING, if it is ready to accept spam traffic because ISP's owner is sure the client will pay for all the traffic - let us teach them.
They waste their money on accepting spam - we will not download it and therefore would not pay for it. Let them feel we are not happy with their attitude to spam and spammers.

the Bat! is perfect e-mail client, it's Selective download feature used along with DNSBL (or SpamPal for example) gives us the control back.

I set the Bat! to ignore spam, once in a while I check the server for the false-positives that are left there.
I do not waste my traffic, I do not loose my mail.

The SpamPal is trainable too. Switching on a good set of the public black-lists and letting SpamPal to auto-whitelist the legitimate senders - one will never get any spam at all after approximatelly two weeks of usage.

Why waste CPU power on digging through the GIF-instead-of-text messages? Are you sure you'll teach a content filter all the languages on Earth?! Spammers are able to fool any artificial intellect of a filter...

Zombie or no zombie - the problem of spam should be ISP's responsibility. It is their responsibility to catch all spam by installing the dedicated e-mail harvester, they must analyze if it is spam indeed - this is where your software is just in place! When this harvester identified a sender as the spammer - it must report to ISP's greylisting and DNSBL databases not to accept the traffic bound for ISP's human clients.

I'm sure we pay enough to ISP for them to fight spam for us!

By introducing the client-side content filters you a sort of betray us, clients, by taking off ISP's dutyes to identify spam.
If ISP would not get money from spam and spammers, if they will loose their money because they waste traffic nobody accepts and pays for - they will have to stop hosting spammers.

You should sell you software not to individuals but to ISPs.
