Loss of settings accounts and registration, New virus may be related

I've opened a ticket on this also but there is a new virus some sites say detected within the last month that is bypassing my latest updated BitDender (highly related by many) and causing theBat mess.

In case others have this issue thought I'd also post here for any dicussion especially if others become infected.

I think this is virus related but must be easier way to reset up.

Computer freezes middle of night have to hard reboot.

theBat opens in evaluation mode and no accounts. Every time this happens have to add accounts (add name and it detects prior settings and folders but have to do for 9 different accounts individually)  Have to redo registration and change all settings to mine again.

I tried deleting the entire theBat directory and copying backup (done every hour of activity as well as offsite daily).   But even in the backed up directory theBat launches in evaluation mode with no accounts listed until set them up again.

Is the file that knows the accounts, settings, registration info in some other directory or in the registry?

I think the culprit may be a virus that bypasses BitDefender which monitors all incoming maiil, files as opened etc.  I found 9 instances of Win32.Worm.Kidals E in the trash of a theBat account and in a Recyclers directory.  "Disinfecting failed" but I think I've deleted them all and virus scan is now clean.

But if it bypasses the virus defender again its a pain to keep resetting up all my accounts and re registering theBat.  Is there an easier way to get it back?

Thanks
Dave in Phoenix

There is an easier way.
Close TB when everything is ok.
Start regedit
Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!
In Regedit's menu you choose:
File -> Export -> Pick some name and location -> Save
Now you've got a file called something like TBsetup.reg
Next time TB fails to start properly, you close it. You double click on TBsetup.reg, the registry editor asks whether you want to import these settings, you answer yes an you're done. When you start TB, the registration info and account locations are back.

Your advice was timely.

Copying the registery saved a lot of time.  I had been looking in the registry but for theBat entries not RIT directory.

Last night it happened again. But did a virus scan which was negative using Bitdefender before I left. When returned this time computer wasn't locked up like before but no theBat other than in trial mode and no accounts.urrrg  I ran a virus scan and none were found!

If it happens again may try AVG plugin or another virus program but reviews say BitDefender one of better ones.

Double clicked on my exported reg file as you suggested and all came back except the address books. Had to to a manual Load Address Book set which wsa easy.  So again thanks for the suggetsion.

Now if I can just figure out why its losing what seems to be the registery entries at night when I'm gone!

Might it be a case of Windows corrupting its registry and therefore returning to a restore point?
What happens when you create a new restore point  after you've imported the RIT registry keys?

It isn't a problem that sounds familiar with regard to TB, so I tend to look somewhere else for the cause.

Interesting thought...

But I am not using restore points.. I have Rollback that makes image copies of drives every hour and can easily get back on a file by file basis.  And I don't think...cross fingers.. any other programs other than theBat are being effected.  Weird... and don't think TB is doing anything to itself is just the victim of something weird.

Will see what happens tonight!

Oh Oh..

Any idea why I'm losing my address books even while TB is running.  I get them back by "loading address book set" which has about 6 books in it.  They are rather important since have 600+ members of a weekly e-mail newsletter I send out.

If I exit TB and bring it back..it is now OK, doesn't go back to trial mode but address book sets keep getting unassociated.  The reg fix didn't seem to be where the address book association is.

I just finshed running a full virus scan again and it comes up clean.
