When composing a new message, why is the cursor able to go anywhere in the text area?  The cursor moves around when I click into the window or with the arrow keys.

How can I turn this off?  I'd like the cursor only to go where there is typing.

That's because you're using MicroEd, which is a free caret editor, really wonderful when you get used to it.
If that's a real problem, you could use the Windows editor, you can change this in the editor on a per message base (Options -> Message Format) or as a preference from the main window (Options -> Preferences -> Viewer/Editor)

So you are saying this behaviour cannot be changed?

I too prefer the cursor to NEVER go beyond the end of the text. If I click way over to the right of any text, I want the cursor to be placed at the end of the text on that line, not way over to the right.

In that case use the Windows text editor, just like I said.

If you don't like a free caret editor, don't use MicroEd.
