Virus detected - what now, Found Viruses can´t be removed because no anti virus plugins exist!

Hello Everybody,

I use The Bat v3 and I also use Kaspersky Antivirus Pro 5.0 (but this also concerns the personal well as Norton or McAfee)

Every once in a while I do a full scan of my The Bat folder. Some times it happens that a Virus is found.

When I´m lucky its found in the trash or spam folder because then I just have to delete all of them over the maintenance menu.

If I´m not so lucky the virus is found in my well used inbox or even an imap folder. This really gives me a hard time because since The Bat is storing mails in maildatabases the virus is not detected in a single mail but in the mail database that holds thousands of mails in which is the one that is infected. There is no way of guessing which file it is.

For all anti virus programs I tested (except Kaspersky Pro 4.5, for which someone else than ritlabs wrote a plugin not available on this site) in many or most cases it is not possible to clean or delete a virus from within a mail database.

I often asked why there is a plug-in function for anti virus software when ritlabs never integrates even the most commonly used software but never received a reply nor did anybody tell me how to deal with this problem.

Ritlabs doesn't make plugins for virus scanners at all. Ritlabs only offers an interface where anti virus plug-ins can hook themselves into TB.
So if you want a plug-in fr your favourite virus scanner, you need to contact the producer of the scanner.

When your scanner finds a virus in a folder, the first thing you should try, is to compress that folder. Since viruses commonly contain garbage, it's likely that you've marked it already as deleted, so it's probable that compressing does the trick.
As an added note, this makes it advisable that you delete messages with odd attachments. It's not that you'll get infected via TB, because that won't happen, but just because of interaction with virus scanners and saved disk space.

There really is a question I need to ask to understand this matter:
Why should Anti Virus Companies offer a plug-in for an e-mail client (the bat) that is only used and known by specialists and enthusiasts and has, compared to other products like outlook eudora or netscpae/mozilla, only a very small number of users?

I statet before that if you have a companyname like microsoft or netscape you can make other companies follow your path an develope plugins based on your standard but in this case ritlabs with its products (which I as an expert like very much) is not large enough to force other companies to hook onto their interfaces.

This Antivirus and Spam plugin interface is totally useless until ritlabs makes an effort to write their own plugins for virus scanners or move towards those companies in a partnership to develope them.

The result can be seen for a long time now. Since I do remeber there is not a single really working and well documented plugin either for antivirus or spam available. This really shows me that I´m right.

But getting upset about it does not help me with my virus problem anyway!

thank you for your tip. But as I said earlier I don´t think that it is supposed to work this way.

Way do ritlabs users have to wait until a private person writes an Anti Spam Plugin thats actually works in order to use their software. Ritlabs has to provide a working version and not someone called Achim,...

That is a no go for me! I paid for this feature!

The BayesIt filter is written by someone called Alexey N. Vinogradov. It is a 3rd party plugin and is not written by RITlabs. BayesFilter works perfectly for most. They don't have to supply any more than they do.

RITlabs had to choose one Bayesian spam filter to bundle and chose Alexey's. This is only because Achim's wasn't as far advanced at the time they had to decide. Neither is better than the other. Neither is more "the one you paid for" than the other.

I really do suggest that you stop shooting yourself in the foot about this and download and use Achim's BayesFilter instead. It works for me where Alexey's didn't.
