TheBat Hangs in Vista, Upon load, theBat hangs with 50% CPU utilization on WIndows Vista

Hello...

I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit.  I installed TB Home v3.98.4, and did not migrate my settings from the previous computer.

At the end of the installation process, TB found my existing message bases, and prompted me to load them.  I did so.

TB ran fine. After I was done reading new mail, I shut it down.

Now, when I start it, TB hangs at the splash screen and and I notice that it is taking 50% of the CPU utilization.  I have left it for over an hour, and nothing changes; still hung, still 59% utilization.

Note that I have approximately 4gb of message bases for 6 email accounts.

Anyone have an idea on how to fix this?  I really need TB to work; all my business communication is via email.  If I don't solve this soon, I'll have to switch to Outlook <gasp!>

Thanks...

An update on the situation...

Three times, I rolled back to before TheBat was installed (System Restore), and reinstalled.  Each time goes the exact same way.  TheBat loads and runs correctly only the first time it is loaded (at the end of the install process). Each time it is loaded thereafter, it will always hang and consume 50% of the CPU time.  The process then has to be killed.

Thing this may be cause by the size of my messages bases, I removed _all_ files from my Bat data directory, then tried running TheBat.  Again, it hung.  I did notice though, that TheBat first recreated the directories and configuration files that were supposed to the in its data directory.

Any one else having a problem with TB and Vista?

Another update.

I rolled back again and reinstalled, but this time, I created a completely new install in a new directory, including setting up one account manually.  After TB loaded, I quit and restarted. Again, hang and CPU.

Then I just happened to notice ex_log.txt.  It contains:

v3.98.4 MARS/Administrator 3/11/2007 8:36:31 PM Controls:TWinControl.MainWndProc EOSError System Error.  Code: 1411.
Class does not exist
v3.98.4 MARS/Administrator 3/11/2007 8:36:31 PM Controls:TWinControl.MainWndProc EOSError A call to an OS function failed

So, it looks like the TWinControl.MainWndProc class is missing.

I'll pass it on.

The same problem here.
I am using Vista Business, after I restarted the Bat takes over 50% CPU and hungs up...

Could you please test 3.98.06 from http://www.ritlabs.com/download/files3/the_bat/beta/tbb39806.rar (just extract this archive and replace your thebat.exe file) and let me know whether it also hangs on Vista?

Hello Maxim...

Sorry, it didn't seem to help:

Class does not exist
v3.98.6 MARS/Administrator 3/14/2007 12:50:24 AM Forms:DoDestroy EAccessViolation Access violation at address 0093B7BC in module 'thebat.exe'. Write of address 00000334

BTW, I don't know if it is significant, but this machine is running a quad CPU (QX6700).

Thanks for your help!

Michael DAvid!

Thank you for the log, but the addresses in the log are modified by Vista's Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) feature. These modified addresses do not alow us to find the exact code where the problem happens.

Could you please use StripReloc at http://www.jrsoftware.org/striprlc.php to delete the relocation table from thebat.exe, it will remove the ASLR feature, to ensure that the correct addresses are used. Just let me know if you need more information about StripReloc or ASLR. Thank you for coperation!

Maxim Masiutin!
I installed the update 3.98.06. Tried it couple of times yesterday and working on it today. So far no problems... I am using Vista Business.

Thanks,
Gregor

BTW now have similar problems with Adobe Reader. Hangs on installation and I can see it in task manager...

Same here...On Vista Business upgraded from XP; it fully functioned for more than one time, but one day hangs on load and cpu busy at 80% ; installed 3.98.06 and it did start again fully functional.

Paolo Dell'Unto!

Did you apply StripReloc to The Bat! executable before it started to work properly?

Hi,

I have been running Voyager on Vista RC2 Build 5744 without any problems whatsoever. Not sure if anything has been changed in the final release of Vista that may affect the problems above or if it is an issue with The Bat!

Which leads me onto another question, I still do not understand why Ritlabs is developing both Voyager and The Bat! ?

Why not just use Voyager for USB stick and Desktop?

I have it installed on both and it works fine.

Hi Gregor!

I ran:

C:\Program Files\The Bat!>stripreloc thebat.exe
StripReloc v1.13, Copyright © 1999-2005 Jordan Russell, www.jrsoftware.org

thebat.exe: 11963384 -> 11515384 bytes (448000 difference)

Sorry, the problem still exists.

Michael DAvid!

Do you mean that the problem of "50% of the CPU utilization" still exists?

If yo will find new entries from the ex_log.txt (after StripReloc), please send them to my e-mail (max@ritlabs.com).

Hi Maxim. Yes, I mean it hangs and goed to 50% utilization.  That problem still exists after stripreloc.

Funny thing is, though, TB is no longer generating a ex_log.txt. (after stripreloc)

I thought of another thing that is somewhat unusual about my setup.  I am running three monitors with a spanned desktop of 3072 x 768.  Don't know if that helps track this down at all.

Same here, after few days of working 3.98.06 hangs up and takes above 50% CPU....
Please help, I am using TB for work and cannot to the mail today...

Gregor T!

Please try using StripReloc to modify your THEBAT.EXE.

The instructions on using stripreloc are above in this discussion. If you will have further questions on using StripReloc, please let me know.

Same as mine, Vista Ultimate Upgrade from XP,
Sometimes will hang CPU >50%(DuoCore2 6600, 2G RAM, 32bit) but not always, then after reboot, sometimes will work. Here is the log

I will try 3.98.6 and StripReloc also, let's see any improvement here...

BTW: I have set thebat.exe run as administrator

Ok, Here is my test result.
Step1: Use thebat.exe 3.98.06(decompressed from tbb39806.rar)
  Still hang same as before
Step2: StripReloc.exe thebat.exe (3.98.06 version)
Step3: Killed hang thebat process from taskmanager
Step4: run thebat.exe(after StripReloc)
Then the problem is solved.

Thanks a lot!

Hi there, folks

I (and many more TheBat! users) am REALLY in trouble now.
Can't get to my mail now, cannot sens/receive, nothing, because of the hanging problem of TheBat! recently.

If I could only have a utility that could make a *.TBK backup file of all my mail & settings, I would just setup TheBat on anoter computer, and restore the (above mentioned) backup.

IS there such a stand-alone backup utility, that operates totally INDEPENDENT of TheBat! itself???

TheBat! is totally NON FUNCTIONAL now and I think it would be a great thing if the developpers of TehBat! could make this 'Quick-'n-Dirty' backup utitily so that at least people could rescue their email and go on with their email-life.

Anyone??
HELP

Hello...

Any news on this problem?  I really miss TB. :)

I bought a new computer with vista ultimate. However if I try to collect mine emails it says message received after this the email does not come in the post in box. The other message it gives is "fetch could not save file (filename c:\users\admin\appdata\local\temp\bat5B8B.tmp).

Any idea how to get the voyager working again ?

Same sort of problem here: installed Vista Ultimate 32, installed The Bat 3.98.4, use my old mailfolders. Everything works just fine.
After rebooting however, The Bat won't start again. It is not even the splash screen hanging, no.
I get the windows messagebox: "The Bat! E-Mail client. Works with Windows Vista has stopped working."
Please fix this - obvious - vista problem, because I need to be able to get to my mail.
I too have backups, but without the mail program they are useless.

im having the same sort of issues, although i have now installed the bat.exe 3.98.06 (from the compressed tbb39806.rar) by first downloading a program that would decompress that file...

ive never used striploc before and dont understand from this forum the exact process i have to go through to "use striploc on the bat.exe".

could someone explain that to me step by step? because im expecting my now working TB to start hanging again as i see some folk mentioning in this forum that after a couple of days thats what happens.

thanks

The Bat! 3.98.06 (from the compressed tbb39806.rar) is a beta version, I'd recommend to discuss beta issues at TBBETA mailing list rather than this forum. For example, 3.98.06 is outdated, the recent beta is 3.98.10. To subscribe to TBBETA, just send an e-mail to tbbeta-join@thebat.dutaint.com
