NAV outgoing scan prevents BAT send mail, possibly Norton Liveupdate killed it

The other day TB refused to send a mail giving the following error - "SEND  - Server reports error. The response is: HELO/EHLO with localhost. You are not me.". I attempted to resend and it went out ok.

Today I could not send any emails from any account that I use TB for.

Disabling outgoing email scanning in Norton AntiVirus fixes it - this might possibly due to Liveupdate as I did notice an update other than for antivirus virus definitions, but didn't pay it much attention.

Anyone else suffer this?

theBat should report some error, is it just 'can't connect to server' or another?

check theBat log (CTRL+SHIFT+A) and also NAV log, this may bring some clarity.

try to increase server timeout

see if you can send mail with another app like outlook express through the same smtp server.

See if the problem is fixed by disabling your firewall (with NAV mail scan ON)  
If yes check firewall rules, I noticed these are sometimes (very rarely though) automatically modified after an update. Best set theBat to 'Permit all'. In case you use a local smtp check the rules for it as well.

and finally, if no solution, just keep NAV outgoing mail scan disabled until the next update.

Just keep it disabled. Outgoing scanning has no use at all. If your virus scanner doesn't recognise a virus when it's running (and it has to be in order to send itself) then you can imagine the scanner will be too stupid to recognise the virus in the outgoing mail.

TB reports an error. It reports the error that it receives from the server. Just to be clear on this subject. NAV intercepts the traffic between the server and the client and starts acting to the client as a (local) server. So TB thinks it's connecting to the server while it's connecting to NAV. So any messages passed on by NAV are server messages as seen by TB. So TB knows it's connecting to the server.

It's not always like this. True for viruses that spread themselves through email, but I doubt any of these can use theBat.
But if you simply attach a zip with an infected file, only the outgoing mail scan may catch it - especially if the virus gets known after the latest definitions update, without a full system scan performed afterwards. So it's not completely useless to have an outgoing mail scan.

yes NAV looks like a server to mail apps, so checking TB and especially NAV logs may help you identify the problem. I also suggested to check the firewall as it may block the NAV mail proxy (even if the firewall is Symantec's too)
