Hangs When Checking Mail

There are a couple of other posts about this problem, but no replies.

I have several accounts checking mail every few minutes. Consistently, several accounts will hang when checking mail. If I don't abort all tasks, it will hang for hours. I was under the impression that the server timeout would deal with the inability to connect. Timeout is set to 60 seconds.

I have disabled email scanning in ZoneAlarm. No fix.

I am using version 3.98.4. Is this issue being addressed? Does anyone else have this problem?

Is there a setting I can change to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

This is a long known issue, and the developers will be fixing it.

Thanks, Maxim. Appreciate the reply. It's always been slow in checking mail, but it seems this latest version is the worst. I'll look forward to the update.

check 3.99.3, changes were made in latest builds

3.99.3 didn't fix it. I'm under the impression that this is being treated as a "minor bug", when in fact it is a 'major bug', and needs to be addressed. I'm still thinking that The Bat's main function is to check email. When you have to abort all tasks every 5 minutes to get it to do this function, the software becomes useless. As with many other programs I own and use every day, I have been using The Bat since the first version. What sets The Bat apart from the others is that it fixes bugs from the last version, and develops more bugs with the next. I don't recall there ever being a 'stable' version. Stable software just shouldn't need to be updated once a week.

Maybe it's time to quit bloating the software with features most won't use, and work out the bugs that are "long known issues", so we can just check and send mail with no problems.

Anyone got instructions on how to roll back to a previous version that doesn't have this special feature?  I am getting mighty fed up with the email program working this way.

Uninstall TB and install a previous version, your message base will be kept.
If you want to keep your settings too, then create a backup (with TB's intrernal backup system) and restore that after you've installed the old version.

Does anyone know which previous version doesn't have this problem?

I have backed down to 3.98.4 and still have the problem.

do You use any antispam plugin in The Bat!?

None.  It is just the distribution install.  Seems that the connection center hangs to the point that it goes non-responding and I have to force it to shutdown.

I have the bayesit plugin installed.

Disable it. i's causing problems. That's why it isn't included in the recent distributions.

Thanks for the reply, Roelof.

Disabled it by going to Preferences|Plugins and deleting the plug. Restarted TB, and it didn't take it but a few minutes to do it again.

I have about 25 accounts checking mail every few minutes. The odd thing is it does it with random accounts. And once you abort all tasks, and check the account manually, it works fine. Then, a few minutes later, it hangs on a couple of other accounts.

Sounds exactly like the issue I am having.  I have about 15 accounts I am checking with the same results. Only difference is I have never had the bayesit plugin installed.

About twice a day, the connection center goes non-responsive and I have to kill it through task manager.

My connection center continues to work, but it just sits there for hours if I let it. Aborting all tasks in connection center resets it. I never liked to use connection center, because it gets in your face when least expected, but now I have to look at it so I can reset everything. And, with me, it hangs every 10 minutes.

aawebtools: When you kill it in Task Manager, does it also kill TB program, or just kill connection center?

It kills the whole program.

I'm not sure, but I seem to get better response after disabling AVG anti-virus 7.5. I don't open attachments anyway.

TB also seems to take a long time sending DELETE messages to the POP server at the end of a fetch.

Fixed it!!! Yaaaaaa!!!!!  I had eTrust EZ Armor virus program on my computer and just removed it.  Connection center screams through all 15 boxes with no hangups now.  Upgraded to the latest version of TB and still good!

Now I got to find a virus program taht will play well with TB.

I just installed AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5.472 and it seems to play well with TB.
